How can you enjoy the sights in Paris while avoiding the crowds?

We visited in August, when the city is surprisingly quiet due to less business travel and many locals being away on holiday. To avoid long queues to climb the Eiffel Tower, we chose to walk up and at 6.45 pm only had to wait around 20 minutes. We entered the Louvre via the Carousel entrance on the Rue de Rivoli rather than the Pyramid and there was no queue at all, the museum was also less busy as it was late afternoon on a Friday when the Louvre is open until 9.45pm. We found the streets very quiet in the mornings up until around 11am, so this is a great time to walk around the city. The river cruises are also quieter in the morning.
