How can you enjoy the sights in Monterey while avoiding the crowds?

Need to research when the busy times are there-you cannot avoid that. We stayed this week before the Concours show for all the classic cars. Crowds and prices weren't bad. Next week my husband goes back to show a car and the entire Monterey/Carmel area is entirely sold out. Crowds will be out of sight-don't go during these major events.
