South American Bacchus Paradise
It is said that abundance in Mendoza was so great at the beginning of the 20th century, that the Wine Festival was celebrated pouring this elixir in the city’s fountains and street-side irrigation canals. Located at Mount Aconcagua’s footstep, the city is an oasis in the middle of the dry beauty of the central Argentinean Andes.
Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, the colonial city was founded in 1561. The irrigation system created by the natives was further developed and became an icon of the city, currently watering near 100,000 trees. It is surrounded by vineyards and cellars producing world-class wines. Don’t miss the renowned Malbec variety, and try some of the boutique hotels and rural ‘estancias’ in Mendoza’s wine areas.
Its historic relevance comes from the fact that Argentinean hero José de San Martín prepared here his pioneering crossing of the Andes in 1817, aimed to liberate Chile. This amazing trip with mules and on foot is repeated every year by a group of enthusiasts. The area is actually well-known for mountain sports like hiking, rafting, and skiing.
