FAQs about hotels in Ghent

A Historical, Cultural and Culinary Gem

Located in the Flemish region of Belgium, the beautiful medieval city of Ghent is a city of history and romance. It's full of hidden historical, cultural and culinary gems that you can easily discover.

The Gravensteen or "Castle of the Count" is a deceptively enchanting sight dating back to the Middle Ages. Constructed by Philip of Alsace, the count of Flanders, it's partially surrounded by a moat and beautifully restored, and hosts an interesting museum about the history of prison life.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Belfry of Ghent is a medieval tower overlooking the Old Town centre. Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church are the city's other two towers, with St. Nicholas' Church being one of the oldest landmarks in Ghent.

Enjoy a relaxing walk in the picturesque medieval streets and stop at one of the charming traditional restaurants for Belgium beer and a classic Flemish meat stew with French fries. Local delicacies include the popular Belgium chocolate and the purple jelly-filled candies called the "noses".

Antwerp International Airport is 32 miles away, while Brussels Airport is 34 miles. Just book your hotel, guest house, apartment, or B&B through Booking.com and discover everything this stunning city has to offer.

The churches and architecture are beautiful.

The churches and architecture are beautiful. Also the rivers running through the city. There are a lot of free tours that give you the history and tips for what to visit and eat. You can go on little boat rides or just relax at some of the cities cafes and bars. It is super easy to walk everywhere. I would recommend at least 2 days and nights there, as there is a lot to see and you will also want to relax a little there. It rains a lot, so pick when you go wisely or just take appropriate clothes. Look for somewhere that serves the beef stew (Stoofvlees). It's delicious,

Brugges super busy with tour groups and Antwerp just very big Getting around ghent is super easy. Many restaurants and cafes that serve delicious food.

A gem in Belgium, where bicycles rule and there is a laid back feeling... I felt it was a bit like central Amsterdam with the canals, boats and cafés and bikes. There are many things to visit, if you are into culture, and the clothes shopping is very tempting! You can find any type of cuisine, it seems, and the prices are decent for the quality and volume served. I found the service everywhere quick and efficient, and every time I asked to speak in English it was met with a 'no problem' response. The river boat trip lasting about 40 mins means you can see the town from another angle and brush up on your history.

Gent lacked the charm of other Medieval Towns. It had been more of an industrial area, and has a beat-up city feel to it. The Cathedral was worth going into. Be sure to request the Virtual Reality tour downstairs

Ghent is in the heart of Flanders, good base for exploring, but having discovered Leuven, would base future visits there, so close to the Brussels airport, inexpensive hotels at the HBF and fantastic public areas.

Yeah, Bruges is lovely, and Antwerp has its highlights, but Ghent... !! If you can only see one beautiful Belgian City - see Ghent. Wander about enjoying the city, the place is a visual delight.. the old (St Nicks) and the new (the covered market). The people are lovely (their English probably better than yours!) ... then do a boat trip, they are fun and it rests your feet. In the early evening do NOT miss the church bells ... (no spoiler, just dont miss them). Ghent is the best of the five cities we stayed in this trip - by far, and the evenings are sublime. As with many parts of Europe cars are being phased out, so theres almost no traffic to fear. Bicycles rule. There are so many bars to enjoy its impossible to seperate any out... but the Celtic Towers had a proper feel to it, and Trollkelder is a buzz. But they are all superb. Although if you are eating late, dont leave it too late! Most restaraunts seemed to close at 9pm. This year was our second visit and how I wish we had planned to stay longer.

Kris is a fantastic host, very welcoming and as a Ghent local is an expert on the city. I received some great advice about key attractions and places to eat, as well as some of the history of Ghent and Belgium. The room was super cosy and with a nice view of the south side of the city. Breakfast was fabulous, testament to Kris’ exceptional hospitality! Would highly recommend for couples/solo travellers. It’s also near the beautiful Citadelpark and the university botanic gardens, which I definitely recommend for a place to relax :)

The property was built in 1593 by a Spanish marquis, who traded nearby. This fact alone would be enough to impress me, but in addition the staff is very friendly, the interior makes you feel like you're visiting a nobleman, and the location could not be better. I spent around 20 days travelling in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and Ghent was the city that impressed me most. Erasmus Hotel was one of the reasons for it.

We stayed at Van der Valk in Gent while travelling through Belgium with a 6 months old baby. We anxiously chose this hotel for its proximity to major roads and the size of the rooms to make the stay comfortable for both us and our daughter. It was PERFECT!! The staff was accommodating, the facilities were great. We got help with sterilising bottles and we all had a fab night sleep. Breakfast was a winner!! Thank you so much!

I liked the fridge and small kitchenette in the room. It was a nice modern facility. It was good to be able to do laundry at the hotel. Nice seating areas downstairs at reception. It was a 20 minute walk to the town centre. It was great having Ghent Dampoort train station a 5 minute walk away we used that station to visit other places in Belgium, you just had to change at St Pieters in Ghent.
