FAQs about hotels in Ávila

A Place to Lift the Soul

When viewed against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Ávila is truly a spectacular sight. Its fully intact walls rise majestically from a hill, and the many semi-circular towers and 9 gates give it added character. Begun in the 11th century, these incredible fortifications are the symbol of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city.

Partly built into the walls are the rather fortress-like cathedral and the Convent of Saint Teresa, erected in honour of the saint whose childhood was spent in a house on the same spot. Her relics are here, making it a popular pilgrimage spot. The city’s biggest festival is also in her honour and includes a colourful parade, fireworks and fights in the bullring.

Teresa entered the Incarnation Convent in Ávila, but found herself at odds with the practices, so founded a new monastery: the Convent of Saint Joseph. Of the city’s other religious structures, the Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas is particularly of note as it contains the tomb of Don Juan, son of King Fernando.

Other Ávila sights include the Torreón de los Guzmanes - a tower attached to the provincial council headquarters – and the Four Columns monument which offers fabulous city views.

The Ávila accommodation on Booking.com includes boutique hotels, traditional guest houses and cheap apartments near the train station.

We loved Ávila, the city walls are the main attraction, plus there are monasteries and churches to visit. The walled city is easy for waking around. There are many restaurants with outdoor eating areas. The one thing to be aware of is that the town more or less closes down from 2:00 until about 5:00. This is common in Spain but may surprise visitors who are not aware of “siesta.” That was when we returned to the Parador for snacks in the club room and terrace. I will mention that the food in the Parador restaurant was delicious and they had vegetarian options right in the menu without me having to ask, which I really appreciated!

    Avila is an interesting place.

Avila is an interesting place. Not very big and a beautiful wall around the city. We felt that the attitude of the people in Avila were slightly different than in the other cities we visited. We felt less welcome and at times starred at. We were as foreign tourist definitely in a minority group as almost all other tourist were Spanish. Perhaps we just met the grumpy ones and were unlucky. When ask at some attractions where we were from for statistical purposes we noticed that the response to us replying 'UK' was frown and the tone became slightly sharper...

On balance, I'm not so sure Avila was the right choice for me. It isn't easy to get to - however you do it, it takes three trains from Madrid airport. The last one - from Madrid Principe Pio - takes over 90 minutes. Even so, Avila seems to be a place for day trips, so the lunchtime crowd is busy, but the place is a ghost town at night, with a lot of restaurants not even open (at least when we were there in a May midweek). Restaurants are curiously not geared to tourism - English speaking staff and English menus are the exception (and just forget it if you want German or French). I would contrast Avila unfavourably with Santiago del Compostella, which is ostensibly similar but is easier to reach, has far more hospitality choices and is much more tourist friendly.

A gem of a place, a walled city with plenty to see.

A gem of a place, a walled city with plenty to see. Besides all the usual things to do, don’t miss the Basilica de San Vincent, just outside the walls - use the audio-guide - an amazing history. Also, a small museum housing the artwork of Guido Caprotti was a delightful find (we would have overlooked, but needed to kill time). Cuatro Postes (Four Posts) is well worth the walk to see a magnificent view of Avila, especially at sunset, and after, when the walls are lit up. Not forgetting a walk along the walls themselves, you can do a short version or longer one. A very special city.

    It is a beautiful town.

It is a beautiful town. The long complete wall is very attractive as are the buildings. I was interested in St Teresa of Avila but even if she is not of interest, it is well worth a visit for the general environment.

Lovely old walled city in heart of Spain.

Lovely old walled city in heart of Spain. The old part is not overly commercial - there are shops and restaurants/bars but also plenty of areas where the heritage buildings are the stars and have not been subsumed under tourist tat. The market Plaza is small but really lovely with several places to eat and drink. There is also a fruit/veg market on (I think) a Thursday. We drank and ate at the Vermuteria a couple of times which is incredibly good value for money - for instance 2 drinks and 6 tapas choices for 13 Euros. Walking the amazing wall is a must - its in perfect condition and you get great views over the surrounding countryside. We also enjoyed Saint Theresa's museum & reliquary - despite not being religious, it's a very interesting place to visit. Avila is a good base for other fascinating cities: we went to Segovia and Salamanca, both of which took about an hour by car and are well worth a visit. Finally, we parked on the road right outside the city wall. It was 1 euro which lasted 24 hours and even longer at the weekend!

Long walk from train station but hotel is easy to find esp when it is by the front gate of old Avila fortress town. Odd that the room is small but bathroom is large . Very warm as the wall is about a metre thick. Love to be able to stroll outside the Avila walls safely at night.

Great location, right on the wall, modern, great value for money, and comfortable. If you're travelling to Avila on your motorbike, this is the hotel for you. The owner is a biker, and there is a secure garage where you can park your bike for free!

This is a small hotel with restaurant in a quiet residential area. The facility is new and very clean. The staff is kind. Avila's old town is close enough.
