Always enjoy staying at Barnard Castle.
Always enjoy staying at Barnard Castle. Staying at the Redwell Hotel. The only thing this time the sash window was stuck open a little bit .wich made it a little chilly in the night and the wind was howling

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Barnard Castle is a great place to enjoy a holiday plenty of things to do, fantastic scenery and great walks catering for people of all ages, Lots of great shops, pubs and cafes. There's some lovely shops that have nice gifts and clothes. A variety of different pubs which have a wide variety of beers wines spirits and some nice food and had special themed food nights which was reasonably priced. in some of these pubs again catering for a variety of needs. Loved the butchers that we could buy a number of very tasty meat and savoury treats. We loved exploring the different pubs as each had a unique features. We had a great cut through that took us straight into the town from the bridge at the side of the castle, It was disappointing to see fewer places that allowed dogs which could make it difficult to enjoy the great pubs and cafes so suggest checking dog friendly places to eat and drink. Its also close to lots of surrounding places to visit. We did find the path around the castle to the bridge a challenge but took it steady. The fish and chip shops were very tasty and staff very pleasant.
We visited Barnard Castle from US (Brooklyn NY) for a family wedding. We were not familiar with the area, but loved how the home is tucked away on a quiet street yet walking distance to center of town . Don't forget to look at the helpful binder and sit in the little garden. I really appreciated the treats on arrival as we had a very long train journey. The house is packed with charm and kept very clean. I only wish we could have stayed more than two nights.
We were looking for a stay near High Force and Barnard Castle so this was perfect! A really reasonable rate with hearty breakfast included. We received simple instructions of how to access our room and were very pleasantly surprised at the lovely room we had. So comfy. We had a shared bathroom but didn’t see another person during our stay. The staff were lovely and the locals friendly and helpful in the bar.
Really great place to stay, gorgeous local area. The room I had in the courtyard was exceptional, cosy but enough space. Decent comfy bed, powerful shower and so quiet you cannot hear any other guests. The breakfast was delicious and I also had an evening meal there too which was superb. There were a few of us staying with our dogs and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely book again!
Carole made us so welcome and her attention to detail is flawless. Our room was beautiful and comfortable and our breakfast each morning was delicious.
Again, Carole was so attentive to our needs, whether it be activities to pursue or places to dine in Barnard Castle and beyond.
I have nothing but praise for Newgate House with a promise to return.
All out love.

Nice bustling, friendly pub in the centre of Barnard Castle. The free parking at the back was welcomed and check in was really easy. Our room was small but comfortable and well laid out. Really comfortable bed and great shower. We had dinner in the pub in the evening and it was delicious. Breakfast the next morning was also good.
Friendly welcome. Convenient for Barnard Castle. Available parking on the roadside. Comfortable bed. Lovely cooked breakfast but the offer of some fruit juice or fresh fruit/ yoghurt would have made it an excellent breakfast. There is a menu available for people wanting an evening meal which looked quite delicious.
Even though the place is on the main thoroughfare, the room was quiet and clean with water and coffee making facilities, which was ideal after a walk around the market place. The bed was comfortable and the shower facility was perfect after a good wander around Barnard Castle.
The cottage was excellent value very clean with a great location.
We would definitely book again if we revisit Barnard Castle. Gea the host was perfect when answering any questions we asked and the instructions where the cottage was located etc were excellent.
Lovely apartment. Right in the center of Barnard castle. Very cozy. Lovely bathroom. Lovely touch from the proprietors on arrival. Milk bread biscuits and cereal. All your cleaning stuff if needed. Nothing wasn't thought off, we will definitely be back again
The hotel was central to the town which was good as one of our party wasn't very mobile. Food was excellent and quick service. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff and they were so friendly and polite, they were a great team👍
Very quaint manor hotel in a really lovely location just outside of Barnard Castle. Even though we didnt have a dog with us it is a bonus. The decor, rooms and bar area were very nice.
central in Barnard Castle close to shops etc. Staff friendly and helpful. Room clean and comfortable and warm. plenty of tea, coffee and milk. Tasty breakfast and plenty of it.
The location as excellent - we walked into the town for some lunch. The snow made travelling difficult and our car was stuck at the property in the snow on friday.
