I think some money needs to be spent updating the decor of the hotel and rooms. The room rate is inexpensive and hotel is in a good location but it is looking a bit worn. There was a crack in the top corner of room near the front window of our room and given the connection of the hotel with Charles Dickens, the hotel undersells itself. There was also loud music coming from the bar downstairs in same hotel complex.

Rochester is great The Royal Victoria and Bull Hotel is not somewhere anyone should trust to stay.
Where was the staff?
Why was the gates locked?
Why was there not a message on the gate or at reception?
How is this hotel allowed to remain in relation to health and safetytt?

Different places and things appeal to different people. OK.
Different places and things appeal to different people. OK. But I'm more than happy to put in a word for Rochester, It was, until 1998 when "Medway" (population 250,000 was created from Rochester, Chatham, Strood, Gillingham and Rainham, all today more or less contiguous) a historic and important small City.
Now Rochester is just a "Town", which seems frankly ludicrous. Population only 60,000 and they have problems. The High Street includes far too many Charity Shops, although also some beautiful and historic buildings. Too close to London. But Rochester also has the second oldest Cathedral in England, and still largely Norman Architecture rather than Canterbury's huge late Gothic. Rochester also boasts the tallest and best preserved Norman castle keep in both England and France. Then there are all the links with Charles Dickens and much else besides. And then the Chatham Historic Dockyard, worth a day's time of anyone interested in British history and only a few miles from Rochester.
I note the 2021 Lonely Planet Great Britain (page 162) manages just over 2 column inches on Chatham Dockyard. And that's it. Not even a mention of Rochester or "Medway" in the index. That, in my book, is all you need to know about "Guide Books"!

The historic High Street is a short walk from the train station. The pavements and road on the High Street can be uneven, with cobbles in places , which adds to the charm.
Favorite places to eat-in are: The Quills (offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails), Padrino's Pizzeria (eat in & takeaway/delivery), Cathedral Pie (offering traditional pie and mash with parsley sauce/gravy, jellied eels), Pizza Express and there are also tapas, Japanese, fish and chips and a variety of cafes and bars.
The Cathedral, Castle and local museums are always interesting, with local events going on.

We used Rochester as a meeting point for family members who had not been able to meet together for many, many years. Rochester had a lovely historical atmosphere and we were easily able to find places to eat together and to amble around the sites including the cathedral, castle and museums and visitor centre which had a great display of the flying boats built here in the past. Pity more is not made of that, on the original site which is now a housing estate. (Perhaps the road names should have been those of the boats???) Charles Dickens, a local name, was of secondary interest to our group.

I am biased because I was born in Rochester, and lived there as a child. So for me, visiting is like going home. However, I did want to mention that the town is even better now than I remembered. It has more restaurants now, coffee shops, the train is more centrally located. It definitely feels like a tourist high street now, with mostly shops appealing to visitors rather than locals. However, at least while we were there, we did not find it too busy, or any of the attractions crowded. The Castle and Cathedral are both worth a visit. And the high street offers enough experiences for a few days. There are shops, and a museum, as well as delicious bakeries and antique stores. Even with my history with the town, I would highly recommend this location for a weekend trip.
The Hotel was in a perfect location to visit Rochester High Street the Cathedral and Castle. The Hotel was not staffed at all times, but there were staff there when needed.
The breakfast was really good, freshly cooked and plenty of choice with the cereals, fresh fruit and drinks.
Our room was over looking the High Street and very clean and tidy, could probably do with a new coat of paint in the near future, as there were slight patches on the walls.
The facilities in the room were also good, tea, coffee etc.
The location was beautiful. Set in the countryside with immaculate garden, plenty of room to park and the barn has been lovingly renovated with tasteful decor and furnishings. The owners were friendly and accommodating with great suggestions of places to eat and visit. The breakfast selection was varied, nicely presented and more importantly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return when we visit family in Kent again.
Great experience to spend a night on this historic vessel. Very friendly hosts who have worked hard to transform their floating family home into bespoke bed and breakfast accommodation. Spectacular views across the River Medway and within walking distance (30 minutes) of the historic town of Rochester. Secure parking within a Marina and close to a cosy pub serving excellent food at good prices.
Great hotel in the centre of Rochester , lovely big clean room, great shower , big white fluffy towels, what more could you want , breakfast down stairs in the pub was spot on , can’t do better for the price , we stayed in a four star day before this stay and it wasn’t as good , well done , lady who checked us is was so nice and helpful, sorry didn’t get her name .
The apartment was beautifully decorated and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Located across the bridge from Rochester high street, easy walking distance to the castle and cathedral.
The hotel was in the high street and close to everywhere, the bed was comfortable and the room was spacious, the staff were very helpful and welcoming, we parked in the car park behind the hotel.
The property was very clean and very handy for Rochester Castle/High Street. It was well furnished and comfortable. A nice welcoming pack was kindly left and appreciated. Thank you
N/A. By careful parking it is possible to get two cars parked safely. One small and one medium sized and this is important in Rochester, which has long been a parking nightmare.
10 minutes drive from Chatham docks, close to local supermarket, you can order food to the hotel and they have fridge and microwave. Very helpful and friendly staff.
