Set at the south-western tip of Y-shaped Lake Como, the town of Como offers wonderful views of the surrounding Alps. A funicular railway runs up to the village of Brunate from where you can see Switzerland on the opposite shore.
The peaceful location has long been a favourite with celebrities, but the town has been around since Roman times. In fact, 2 of its most famous sons – Pliny the Elder and Younger – are commemorated in statues on the façade of the 14th-century cathedral. The next door Broletto dates to the previous century, and even older are the remains of the medieval walls and Castello Baradello, sitting on a hill overlooking the town.
Much more modern in style is the Casa del Fascio, built during Mussolini’s rule. The streets between here and the waterfront are packed with shops, bars and restaurants, and Lake Como boat trips depart from the small marina.
The neighbouring park houses a temple-like museum about Alessandro Volta (another former resident), and around the shoreline is elegant Villa Olmo which looks across landscaped gardens to the water’s edge.
The Como accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury lakefront hotels, town centre B&Bs and cheap apartments near San Giovanni Train Station, which offers direct services to Milan.
“Was a fantastic hotel perfectly located in the centre. The staff very helpful and nice. Would highly recommend the hotel to anybody and surely return there next time”
“Very central and the rooms comfortable. I'd stay again”
“Located near San Gionvanni train station but far from the historic part of the city. Perfect if you're driving as the hotel has a parking site. Comfortable rooms and clean bathrom. Very good breakfast. Good value for money considering the price of hotels in Como.”
“Wonderful location - Piazza Cavour. 15 minute walk from Como SG Railway station. View from bedroom - small balcony overlooking the small boat harbour. Cross the road to pier 5 - High speed ferry. Short walk to the funicular railway. Many excellent restaurants close by. Breakfast in a dining room taking you back in time to a splendid era.”
“Perfectly situated, no better place in Como imaginable. Hotel was great, our family enjoyed the stay very much.”
“The staff was very nice we had a small balcony with a nice view. Location amazing, close to the lake and to the center of the city clean and comfortable”
“hotel staff and services hotel breakfast”
“Everything. Clean, comfortable. In the center, near the lake. Fantastic situation.”
“Excellent central location overlooking the lake. Everything is basically near you. The rooms are spacious and clean.”
“We stayed at this hotel for two nights in early January. The location is very good, just in the best part of the historical city centre. Reception people were absolutely fantastic. Very easy check in and check out and very good information about, restaurants, shopping facilities and excursions. Garage indoor and valet service were outstanding and very convenient because we were travelling back from Germany with lots of luggage after weeks of holidays. Our room was confortable, well equipped and quiet despite it was on first floor facing the main road along the lake. Bathroom was large but in need to be renovated. We missed a magnifier but toiletries were very good, as well as towels. Breakfast was very good with excellent scrabbled eggs and bacon. Due to the Christmas holiday period we enjoyed typical cakes as panattone and pandoro. Service was average, but a couple of commis de rang were really without hotel experience. Concierge service was very efficient in booking a great Michelin starred restaurant nearby. We have dined also at hotel restaurant and was very good (if you wish please read separate review). We have enjoyed so much that we have already booked our next stay for four nights in May. This location seems very convenient also to visit expo 2015 in Milan. We highly recommend.”
“Nothing to say its just perfect!!! We enjoyed our stay and cant wait to go again...”
“Comfortable apartment in old town near the lake and city center. Very helpful and nice staff.”
“Delphino Blu restaurant in one of the best in Como area.”
“We had a spacious comfortable room. It's really downtown Como close to the lake and the Duomo. The room was clean and is situated in an appartmentcomplex. It doesn't feel like a hotel. The dinner in the annex osteria gave us a all Italian experience.”
“Room was nicely done (especially the bathroom), even if small. Breakfast was very fine for a small city hotel, with the breakfast staff very friendly. This is a hotel for a short stayover in Como - no big surprises, just what you need for a night's stay. Short walking distance to center of town.”
“Small but cute hotel. Although I booked and paid for single room I got spacious room with double bed. Staff is friendly. Breakfast is good enough for 3 star hotel. Location though not in the historical center still convenient for staying in Como or taking a boat to travel around the lake.”
“The hotel is a short walk from the train station. We opted to stay in Como as opposed to Milano. No regrets! Just a short train trip away and so much more refreshing to stay in Como. The hotel is more or less right in the center of the city and by the lake, charming small restaurants close by. The personal at the hotel couldn't be more pleasant and helpfull. I warmly recommend the hotel.”
“Perfect lake Como hotel. On walking distance from the nice elegant town and direct on the lake.”
