Once Italy’s 2nd largest city-state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognizable historic center is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely "passeggiata."
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade, where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheater remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More sidewalk restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini, the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodations includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.
“Staff are amazingly friendly and helpful! Breakfast was one of the best we had. Location is perfect!”
“Excellent location walking distance from station. Staff were very, very friendly & helpful. Nice restaurants in square. Great location to enjoy the July music festival which takes place in the square. True Tuscan walled hilltop town, great experience to cycle around the walls. Ideal as a base to travel to nearby towns and cities.”
“We had booked several months earlier and our itinerary had changed. We showed up a day early and they were able to make things work out.”
“Such friendly staff, everyone was so helpful, nothing was ever too much trouble. Valentina gave us superb recommendations to enjoy evening meals.”
“Staff was so helpful and nice. Room was the best 4* hotel on 3 week long European road trip. Steps from the 2-mile wall, shopping, laundromat, museum and delicious restaurants. Parking and personal jacuzzi, in spacious, clean room was icing on the cake. Highly recommended. Would love to return to this perfect Tuscan town and hotel.”
“Very friendly family run hotel close to the city walls so ideal for a city break in Lucca”
“Tasteful decor Wonderful junior suite with a balcony Mario (owner) was superb - nothing too much trouble, always found time to help with our enquiries, arranged taxis a very short notice. Highly recommended!”
“Very helpful staff. Dinner at their restaurant next door was amazing! Had a lovely in house massage, they come to your room and get you and take you to the spa. You must have a bathing suit to enter spa area/hot tub as they allow children/family in.”
“Everything but especially the staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble.”
“Breakfast was amazing, very full and with a wide selection. The room was great and with a large bathroom. The staff was very kind and helpful, no complains.”
“Very good and well placed hotel for trips in the region.”
“The room; with a very good "accessible" bathroom. Gardens, ambience, staff. Liked restaurant. Breakfasts.”
“Amazing central location, very helpful staff. Stored our bikes for us.”
“At Home Bed and Breakfast was really central to everywhere we wanted to go in Lucca. We were very lucky as we had a room with a city view which overlooked the Anfiteatro. The property is surrounded by many very good restaurants, so we did not need to travel too far for wonderful food! Marco was very welcoming and the other staff were very friendly also. All in all we would have no hesitation in recommending At Home B&B.”
“Loved the neighborhood and location. The unit had any amenity a person could want. The best was the huge, but semi-private and quiet terrace.”
“A small hotel with character, interesting and well-maintained decor and friendly staff.Only a short stroll from the centre of Lucca. Room compact but with all necessary amenities. Breakfast buffet excellent both in quality and variety.”
“Fantastic little hotel just outside the city walls.ALL of the staff are very helpful and friendly and take pride in giving great service. Comfortable rooms which are kept spotlessly clean. Only 10 mins walk to the city centre but we enjoyed using the free bikes to cycle round the old city . Excellent cafe/bar and reasonable prices. Never had the opportunity to try the restaurant. Second visit to Lucca and if we come back it will be to the Albergo Celide. Only 5 mins walk from the train station so no need to hire a car.”
“Stayed at the hotel for a week and had a fantastic time. A quiet location with friendly staff- nothing was too much trouble. The the landlady is especially friendly and even let us borrow cutlery and glasses from the kitchen so we could enjoy a takeaway pizza on our balcony & offered to lend us bikes to cycle into Lucca city centre. Our room was spotless. All in all a perfect & relaxing place to stay for anyone who doesn't mind a short walk to the centre of Lucca.”
“Lovely hotel and great staff inside the walls of Lucca. Nice courtyard. Breakfast is impressive.”
“Great staff, convenient location, nice grounds with pool, excellent breakfast. Close to Lucca, bikes available for rent. Great hotel made to look like a medieval castle.”
