Once Italy’s 2nd largest city-state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognizable historic center is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely "passeggiata."
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade, where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheater remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More sidewalk restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini, the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodations includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.
“Small, personal and helpful. A lovely hotel tucked away in a great location. We asked if it was possible to have an espresso and a cappuccino with our breakfast and they fired up the espresso machine just for us. We sat outside with a great buffet breakfast that set us up for the day.”
“Excellent location walking distance from station. Staff were very, very friendly & helpful. Nice restaurants in square. Great location to enjoy the July music festival which takes place in the square. True Tuscan walled hilltop town, great experience to cycle around the walls. Ideal as a base to travel to nearby towns and cities.”
“Stayed in the tower. Extremely well designed and decorated.”
“I liked everything about the Rex. Most of all the people - it's a family hotel, and the people are exceptionally friendly, warm and helpful. Breakfast was very good value for the price (including excellent local prosciutto, also good fresh juice). Perfect location, close to the historical center and the station, but quiet. Rooms have the old fashioned charm, yet are comfortable, spacious and perfectly functional.”
“Everything. Great room, best breakfast in Italy, very central location, very helpful staff.”
“Very friendly family run hotel close to the city walls so ideal for a city break in Lucca”
“The staff was gracious and accommodating fulfilling any request immediately. The hotel is absolutely beautiful. The breakfast was very good. The entire hotel is very clean.”
“Free Wifi in room Free use of Bikes English speaking staff Very friendly helpful staff Great location opposite walled city handy to railway station”
“Amazing service. It was my wife's birthday and the staff was very helpful. We will recommend to all our friends and family that travel to Lucca.”
“The place was great and the first time the food for dinner was excellent. However on our return the great chef must have been away and his replacement was not fully trained. The accommodation was very good on both occasions.”
“A very pleasant stay. Value for money.”
“Great location close to everything to see or visit.”
“We loved the position of this b&b, at the back of the beautiful piazza Anfiteatro, our bedroom was large, comfortable and airy and very quiet considering it was so close to the lively piazza. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the breakfast room really beautiful with a delicious buffet with all one could desire for a nice, healthy breakfast. We would recommend At Home to anybody looking for a nice place to stay in Lucca”
“We stayed in this apartment for a week, using it as the base for exploring the area around Lucca. It was wonderful to return here every evening. The apartment is quite large and comfortable. The hosts were wonderful and helpful, even bringing us a homemade dessert while we were there. There is a safe place to park a car. I would definitely return and stay here again.”
“Loved the neighborhood and location. The unit had any amenity a person could want. The best was the huge, but semi-private and quiet terrace.”
“A small hotel with character, interesting and well-maintained decor and friendly staff.Only a short stroll from the centre of Lucca. Room compact but with all necessary amenities. Breakfast buffet excellent both in quality and variety.”
“Fantastic little hotel just outside the city walls.ALL of the staff are very helpful and friendly and take pride in giving great service. Comfortable rooms which are kept spotlessly clean. Only 10 mins walk to the city centre but we enjoyed using the free bikes to cycle round the old city . Excellent cafe/bar and reasonable prices. Never had the opportunity to try the restaurant. Second visit to Lucca and if we come back it will be to the Albergo Celide. Only 5 mins walk from the train station so no need to hire a car.”
“Stayed at the hotel for a week and had a fantastic time. A quiet location with friendly staff- nothing was too much trouble. The the landlady is especially friendly and even let us borrow cutlery and glasses from the kitchen so we could enjoy a takeaway pizza on our balcony & offered to lend us bikes to cycle into Lucca city centre. Our room was spotless. All in all a perfect & relaxing place to stay for anyone who doesn't mind a short walk to the centre of Lucca.”
“Lovely hotel and great staff inside the walls of Lucca. Nice courtyard. Breakfast is impressive.”
“Great staff, convenient location, nice grounds with pool, excellent breakfast. Close to Lucca, bikes available for rent. Great hotel made to look like a medieval castle.”
