For tourists looking for an authentic ryokan experience, the Noren Yado Meigetsu can't be beat. Shoji screens, tatami floors, and soft down comforters -- but with modern toilet, shower, and soaking tub made our stay wonderful. The host family is also extraordinarily kind and helpful explaining how things work and what ingredients are in each dish or how to cook certain dishes at your table. And the meals are delicious and beautiful! Our stay in Tsuwano was made especially memorable by the family who run the Noren Yado Meigetsu ryokan.

Tsuwane is also called 'little Kyoto'.

Tsuwane is also called 'little Kyoto'. In a way, it has something in common, the difference is: there are hardly any tourists. You'll find a 'tunnel of vermilion gates'; a little bit smaller but all for yourself. The old district with the carp swimming in the roadside canals is nice for a walk in the afternoon. Visit the grounds of the old castle with nice views over Tsuwano. At the end of the day you can rest a little bit in the onsen before you go to eat. If you like sushi, visit one of the best sushi-makers of Japan: Fukuzushi (on Takaoka-street).

What a pleasant Staff at the Noren Yado Meigetsu Ryokan in the small mountain town of Tsuwano. The rooms are large for Japanese standards, properly cooled (if wanted) and have all facilities required. It has a very comfortable public bath, that can be used privately . The breakfast is one of the best I have ever had in Japan. A true Ryokan experience in the mountains.

The hotel produced a wonderful vegetarian menu for one of our party for the three day stay. Food for the 3 non-vegetarians was also exceptional with extensive 8-course menus. The onsen bath on the top floor was very relaxing. The hotel room was well appointed and very tasteful. Staff were very attentive and helpful to foreigners as well as Japanese guests.

Hoshi Ryokan was a warmly welcomed few days …my good fortune was to coincide with Tsuwano’s traditional music and dance festival….the ryokan was positively helpful..I felt looked out for as have only a few phrases in Japanese…delicious food beautifully presented with a range of local sakes…tatami mats and futon in a gorgeous room..

Lovely people, so helpful they even wheeled our suitcases to the station and would have carried them over the bridge to the platform if we hadn't stopped them. Food was excellent. Good to be in Tsuwano without day trippers to see the shrine and the castle ruins without the hordes.

Both dinner and breakfast were excellent traditional japanese dishes, and our host was really kind. The ryokan is in a great location to explore Tsuwano on foot.
