San Pedro Lodge Very good 8.4 We’re an Aussie couple winging it through Peru. The San Pedro Lodge is only around 10 or so kms out of Iquitos - by boat of course. There are plenty of more expensive tours and lodges up the river but we were happy to be close to Iquitos so it was not too far to venture back in if needed, which they only charge 15 Soles for (around six bucks Australian). We stayed for six nights, three of them in a Private Bungalow. We were put in it by accident yet allowed to stay there for free until it was booked by someone else. The other three nights we stayed in the shared bungalow, which was great, but I’d certainly recommend paying more for the private one if you can afford it. The Norwegian owner allocates much of the proceeds to supporting the community of the local San Pedro village, which is only a stone’s throw away; you can go and visit at your whim. There were also locally hired staff who cooked and catered amazingly. Breakfast is included but you pay 15 soles each for lunch and dinner – a more than reasonable price. The village chicken was seriously the best we’ve ever tasted. The tour guide, Jino, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and genuine. We tasted some local favourites at the markets, went on jungle and river tours, visited local tribes, swung through the trees on vines like Tarzan and visited the Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm. The tribal communities were in many ways living authentically, but there was no doubt that they had been touched profoundly by the emerging global culture. We had a dance party with one tribe and with another blew their hunting darts. Overall the place was inexpensive and authentically rustic to suit. It was real. And beautiful. During our stay, two shooting stars strutted their dance in the sky above. I would certainly recommend San Pedro Lodge to anyone wanting a cheap and authentic jungle experience, especially because it contributes to the local community.
