The Holy City
The holy city of Mecca is located in western Saudi Arabia and is also known as Makkah. Millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage here, as the pilgrimage is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad was born here, and it is a sacred place for Muslims and the birthplace of Islam.
Non-Muslims are not permitted into Mecca and the government of Saudi Arabia issues special visas for people making the pilgrimage. Many people coming to the city for the Hajj will enter via the Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport, and Jeddah is the gateway to the city.
The Hajj has a fairly set itinerary including a visit to the Sacred Mosque al-Masjid al-Haram, built around the Kaaba.
Mecca contains many restaurants with varied cuisine and coffee shops serving traditional Arabic coffee and dates. There are also many juice stands for a little refreshment amid the heat.
