We did a cruise of Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge which involved two gorges with a short walk in between. This was very enjoyable, comfortable with an interesting and informative narration. Scenery is spectacular and not to be missed.

Katherine was a vibrant town but we were only passing through on our way to Darwin .The Glamping tent accomodation which was pet friendly at the Gorge View Bush Retreat and Sunset view of the Gorge appealed to us as a stopover.

We chose the wrong time to visit Katherine during monsoon season. Most tourist sites are closed and very limited to what you can do. It’s a waste of time for us. In addition the accommodation we booked didn’t meet our expectations, so we decided to drive back to Darwin.

Not much appeal for Katherine Town itself however there is plenty of Indigenous arts and cultural experiences around to witness. Main purpose of the stay was for Nitmiluk which was sensational with a wealth of knowledge from the guides on the Indigenous culture and way of life.

We only spent a day at Katherine, as we were on the way to Kakadu. We visit the Katherine hot springs which was lovely for a morning dip as there weren't many people there yet. Would recommend canoeing in Katherine Gorge, stunning views and you might see some crocodiles. Edith falls is also another good place to visit for a hike and swim.

Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge is amazing.
Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge is amazing. Try to book the sunset cruise, you won't be disappointed. Absolutely beautiful and the guides are great, providing knowledge of the gorge from the Jawoyn traditional owners perspective.
Another highly recommended place to visit is Top Didj - and book the cultural show with Manual. A very fun, interactive and informative session, where he will show you how to make fire, throw a spear and paint traditionally. This is a must do when you're in town.
The best waterhole in and around Katherine is the Hot Water Springs - not overly crowded like Mataranka, and the upper and lower pools are absolutely beautiful. Take a noodle and float on downstream. Best way to cool off in Katherine - the water is not hot, nor is it cold - is the perfect temperature.
If you have time, spend a day at Mataranka and visit Bitter Springs and the Thermal Pools. Both were nice, although very popular and busy.
The 'family budget room' was the best value, at $145 for a queen and single bed in a spacious room. The only room available for most of my stay was unfortunately a $190-per-night room containing three (3) single beds. The staff were great, friendly and responsive (although when I pointed out that they overcharged me, i.e. mysteriously added on 'breakfast' for one of the nights, while they provided a prompt refund, there was no attempt to apologise nor refund the additional 'booking fee' for that invalid charge).
I loved the fact that there was a restaurant on site, as it was a few streets away from the Katherine town centre, and it was getting late when I arrived. They served delicious family fare. Another great factor was that all guests were respectful and stopped any partying at a reasonable hour, around 10 or 11pm, if memory serves me right. I liked the garden and the ability to sit outside with a cup of tea in the morning, listening to the birds. Great value for money.
Renovated motel rooms, very clean, reasonably quiet, great BBQ and pool facilities, which become the focus of the evenings. Breakfast provided at another hotel a short drive away, great staff and thanks to Chris the Manager for helping out with a couple of minor things. Next to the pub and bottle shop, can't go wrong, it's Katherine! Secure parking, Highly recommended.
Great place to stay before going to Katherine Gorge. Tents were fabulous and very well set up. Bathrooms were clean and well equipped. Sunset Deck for the sunset was fabulous and the pizzas were great. Make sure you take your own drinks for sunset - a mistake I made which was disappointing. Would definitely recommend to others to stay here.
Best thing is the food in the restaurant - it is really properly good restaurant food. Good location, quiet, all staff lovely, washing machine and dryer in family room was very useful. While we were staying in a family room we did notice there were really good camping facilities in the hotel grounds for those looking for secure camping.
The staff were so friendly, smiley, helpful and professional.
The room was very clean, modern, comfortable, king bed.
The food at the restaurant was delicious and the breakfast was also a great complimentary addition. Complimentary canapes and drinks on arrival.
Refreshing cool pool.
A great weekend NT staycay at the gorge.
Quiet restful location near the Katherine Gorge which made us feel very well looked after by the friendly and accommodating staff. We appreciated the special effort to accommodate our request for a late breakfast after our lengthy early morning hike.
Our older son managed to join us half-way through our trip at Katherine and Shady Lane were very prompt and helpful when we queried about accommodating an extra person for our last night there.
Was hoping for a better outdoor sitting area than in the carpark… Liked the location - away from main streets and close to Katherine Gorge… the pizza at the restaurant was delicious😋
There aren’t many options in Katherine- this hotel was very clean, comfortable, and relatively updated. Good value for the price. Didn’t try the restaurant but had good reviews. I
