It’s very quiet, very few non hotel restaurants, overpriced food everywhere, can’t swim in the sea unless you don’t mind knee deep water. There’s no town, or town centre outside the beach hotels, so a long stay would be challenging if you want more than just lounging by the hotel pool.

Matemwe and its area is a quiet place where you can relax and enjoy the beach, the activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins) especially if you are a couple, because the village is not very full of enterteinments or night parties.

Crystal clear water - despite there being sea urchins - if you have rock/ aqua shoes - you can still swim and explore the waters and reefs.
The beaches are a lot quieter and peaceful than the busier beaches up north.
The tides are also fascinating to watch- you can walk out to the reefs and cycle along the beaches when they go out!

Marafiki gets a 10/10 from us on all fronts - breakfast, lunch, dinner, pool, cleanliness, hospitality, music, sustainability, beach, communication.
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Marafiki after our Safari and had the most fabulous time. The rooms were very clean and quiet, and beautifully set up.
The food is exceptional - please try the tuna tartar and all the specials!
We had a relaxing time at the spa - you must try the full body scrub and massages.
We used the free kayaks during sunset and enjoyed the stunning view from the water. The water is shallow so even if you go far, you can get off the kayak and swim.
Since the hotel is east facing - sunrise is exceptionally beautiful. The water is still and shallow, and you can see all the fisherman walk up to the reef to catch the fish.
The hotel also arranged a cooking lesson in Matamwe village for us - we learned how to cook ‘muchuzi’ from scratch which was a very meaningful experience.
Overall- no negatives. We had the best time and will be back!

The beach is beautiful, but it's not really a beach you can swim on - there's a big tidal range - when it comes in it's quite choppy with lots of seaweed, and when it's out its corally with lots of urchins. But it's interesting to watch the local people looking for octopus and shellfish every day.
It's quite a quiet area - all the bars are part of hotels. A few nice local restaurants around. Quite a lot of beach touts, which we found off putting. Not loads of activities to do in the area - 1/2 day snorkelling/dolphin watching trips at Mnemba Island basically.
This is my first trip to Zanzibar and I decided to start with Mnemba island and hence Matemwe Magic hotel is what I chose! I couldn’t have asked for anything more! Perfect in all ways. The staff is so polite and friendly. They understand you and take care of your requirements.
The rooms are clean and spacious and it feels amazinggg and most importantly safe! Coz I am a solo traveler.
I would totally recommend this hotel for all travelers coming to Zanzibar and especially plan their itinerary which includes Mnemba island!
Zawadi Beach Villas is located at a beautiful beach in Matemwe. The staff in the hotel is very nice and helpful and the hotel itself is spacious, has a swimming pool and its own restaurant. The hotel is a bit outdated and the aircon is not working properly in some of the rooms. It is a nice place to stay though for good value of money. Matemwe beach is very quiet, you won't see too many people around. It is worth to explore the small local restaurants along the beach, while you are there, for an absolutely delicious fish!
This place is an oasis of tropical, spiritual & happy vibes. It is an heaven for travellers that want a down to earth experience, beautiful garden & common areas. Salama is a super intimate place. The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. We travelled around for 6 weeks in Zanzibar and Salama was easy the best value we got. The beach is just 7 minutes walk from the hotel.
A big bonus is all the cosy places you can work or just relax & read a book at. At Salama we felt at home.
Zanzibar Queen could not have been more perfect!! We had a magical stay!
The location is perfect - secluded enough but not too remote, with the most beautiful beach and not far from Mnemba island.
The staff is so professional, friendly and helpful. From welcome to departure we couldn’t have asked for better service.
The hotel and facilities is clean and tidy and offers plenty to keen you busy. The food was really good and tasty, with a great variety! Can highly recommend it!
Marafiki Beach Hotel is the perfect place to relax. Located on a quiet part of the Matemwe beach it has the classic ‘take your shoes off and dive into a book’ vibe. Sun beds and tents located around the pool are really comfy to enjoy the sun or have a nap in the shade. As in the rest of Zanzibar the high/low tide changes the beach significantly, allowing for never ending morning strolls and afternoon swims (beware sea urchins).
Amazing food and drinks, smiling staff that will care for your every request, great rooms, a wonderful garden and 2 clean pools with fantastic views. This is the best hotel of the 7 others that I stayed at in Zanzibar and I will be back for sure! Thank you to the management and the team!
The location was good and cozy new rooms. The staffs were also friendly Halima,Stella and the girl at the counter.Since we went for our honey moon Stella prepared a nice decorated room with flowers.Nice swimming pool and the hotel was like 100m close to matemwe beach.
I love everything about this resort I stayed in other resorts in Zanzibar but this resort offers the best WIFI connection across all the areas including the beach area complimented by great staff, attention to detail, and super luxurious accommodation.
- beautiful small hotel with nice rooms
- Big clean pool
- Directly at the really beautiful beach of matemwe, enough sunbeds for all guests
- Some games/books and stuff for the beach to rent (for free)
- Great laundry service with reasonable prices
Very clean, well kept, small hotel that provides a heaven of peace and privacy in Zanzibar. Staff very attentive. Held by a family who cares about the facility like their home. Good food at the restaurant. 1min walk to the beach. Good value.
One of the best accommodations ever stayed at. Small scale hotel with friendly staff and owners which will go the extra mile. Awesome (Italian style) food and a super relaxed vibe. Swimming pool and private beach with cocktails on demand :)
With it's location at the beach front, Zanzibar Bahari Villas is a great choice to stay and chill for a couple of days. The beach is gorgeous! We were served a rich and tasty breakfast with lots of different choices eggs, fruit, beans etc.
POOL AREA WAS AMAZING. VERY FRIENDLY PEOPLE WORKING THERE. THE HOTEL WAS CLEAN AND BREAKFAST NICE. THE OCEAN IS SO NEAR AND THE BEACH IS AMAZING. YOU COULD DO YOGA AND PLAY VOLLEYBALL IF YOU FEEL SO. 10/10. LITTLE OASIS IN MATEMWE
The hotel is really beautiful and very clean. The staff were extremely friendly and tried everything to make our stay comfortable. The food at restaurant was really tasty and high quality. The beachside area is really scenic.
Amazing boutique hotel, loved everything about it: beautifully decorated, nice garden, close to the beach, delicious breakfast and food at the restaurant… all in all, it felt like an oasis in Zanzibar.
Located in Matemwe this hotel is right in front of the best beach in Zanzibar. If you are looking for a laid back vacation away from the hustle and bustle Matemwe is definitely a spot for you.
It was great being right on the wide, white sand beach. The atmosphere of the small hotel was easy-going and the food was so good that we didn't venture to other places to eat.
