Exceptional
Innsbruck is a large town with various attractions other than skiing, local transport is easy to use, with good areas to walk around and view the old and new buildings, that have been mingled together quite well.

Attractive old city centre, but can do Innsbruck in two days max; for most it's the gateway to the Tyrol, winter or summer. Nice place for a couple/ friends weekend city trip.

A touch of class. Innenstadt is dotted with fancy façades, quaint cafés and historic houses. Gaze at bygone glories at the Imperial Palace and bask in a life of leisure in immaculate Hofgarten Park. Work up an appetite with a climb up to Planötzenhof restaurant, where lunch comes with an exquisite view. Quaff a cocktail at M&M Bar, then get the party started at Innkeller Bar.

Pradl

12 properties

Pradl keeps it real. This district’s home to a mix of students and long-time residents. In Rapoldi Park, Pradl’s people walk their dogs or unwind by the pond, and nippers frolic in the wooden playground. Looking for that perfect panorama? Take your camera to the River Sill, where the view sweeps majestically up to the pyramid-like Serles Mountain.

Hungerburg-Hoheninnsbruck

7 properties

Ski central. This area is home to Nordkette, Innsbruck’s ski area inside the city limits. Hop on the Hungerburgbahn funicular and head to the top. If you’re not a skier, no problem! When winter bites, hot cups of “glühwein” (mulled wine) await all comers. For the coolest club experience, whizz all the way up to Cloud 9, a bar inside an igloo.

Amras

Fancy a spot of exercise? This district is heaven for the leisure-seeker. Huff and puff through the woods on Patscherkofel Mountain, or flex in the Fit 2000 outdoor gym. Go for a bracing walk round Baggersee Lake or take the plunge and dive straight in! When it comes to R and R, snuggle up Bierwirt restaurant for some hearty Tyrolean food.

Local tips for Innsbruck

Flüsterbogen/Whispering Arch
Carina by Carina

Originally from Bavaria, Carina feels at home in Tyrol, with the ski slopes on her doorstep.

If you're in Innsbruck's Old Town, you shouldn't miss the Flüsterbogen. The Flüsterbogen is one of the arches of the gothic Burgriesenhaus and is well hidden behind a souvenir store. The story goes that if you whisper your secrets through the arch, they'll be safe forever.

  • Hofgasse 12, 6020 Innsbrck
47,16° Nord
Babsi by Babsi

Native Tyrolean Babsi originally got to know "Innsbrooklyn" because of its party scene.

This illuminated wall is a classic Innsbruck photo op. All residents have had their photo taken here at some point. It's made up of lots of coloured bulbs and makes for a funky memento of your trip to the city!

Hans Psenner Bridge for lovelocks
Steffie by Steffie

Steffie recently moved to Austria and loves the mountains, although she still needs to learn to ski!

I love this romantic tradition. If you want to show the world that your love is eternal, use a padlock and lock it to the pedestrian bridge just downstream from the Inn Bridge. Don't forget to throw the key into the River Inn afterwards!

  • Hans-Psenner-Steg/Weiherburgsteg, 6020 Innsbruck
Façades in Wilten
Christoph by Christoph

Snowboarding fanatic Christoph is both a culture vulture and a party animal.

Wilten's a charming little district with beautiful buildings. The façades have beautiful decorations, stucco and paintings. One of the most charming things is that a lot of building have small tower on the corner. Make sure you take your camera!

  • Müllerstraße/Schöpfstraße, 6020 Innsbruck
Happy Nightskate
Nica by Nica

Bubbly Nica loves the range of possibilities in Innsbruck, especially the night-time activities.

Every Wednesday in June and July there's a mass outdoor rollerblading event, when hundreds of people get together and blade round a route. It lasts about 2 hours, there are special themes and they also offer workshops. If you're interested, just head to the Happy Fitness gym.

Transport

Innsbruck transport

Air - Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck's Kranebitten Airport is only 3 km from the city centre. A taxi trip takes under 15 minutes and costs around EUR 12 to 15. A much cheaper option is the bus. The regular F bus goes to the centre and the train station from the airport. It costs EUR 2.70 at the bus stop, although if you buy the ticket from the Trafik shop, it costs EUR 2.30. If you're planning on making several journeys while you're in town, go for a 24-hour or 1-week ticket.

Train

Innsbruck's main train station is just 5 to 10 minutes' walk from the city centre. Since the city's quite small, people don't use the train to travel within the city. However, there are good connections to many other cities in the Alpine region and beyond. You need to buy tickets in advance, and it's cheaper if you get them from a machine.

Bus

As you'd expect, Innsbruck's bus and tram networks are very reliable and well organised, running every 5 to 15 minutes. Most have a burgundy or white colour scheme. You can get a ticket on board, at the machines at the stops or at the Trafik tobacconists. If you're in Innsbruck for a while, it's advisable to get a multi-journey ticket.

Car

Using a car in the city centre is not recommended as there are several pedestrian zones, one-way streets, and parking is either not possible or quite expensive (especially the parking garages). If you arrive by car, use the Park + Ride areas next to the Tivoli Stadium (motorway exit Innsbruck Mitte) or at the Hafen parking area (motorway exit Innsbruck West) and then take the bus, running every 30 minutes.

Funicular

The New Hungerburgbahn is a hybrid funicular railway connecting the city centre with the Seegrube cable car in the Hungerburg district. The train goes from the city centre to the bottom of the Seegrube Cable Car in just 10 minutes. With its futuristic stations designed by architect Zaha Hadid, it's a cool way to travel up the mountain. A single ticket costs EUR 4.60 for adults.

Cable car

The cable car connects New Hungerburgbahn with Seegrube's top station (Hafelekar) at 2,300 metres. It's the quickest way to get up to the top for skiers, snowboarders and those that want to enjoy a drink on the mountaintop. To get to the departure point from the city centre, you can either get the Hungerburgbahn funicular or hop on bus J, which is free during winter if you're carrying ski gear or a board. Adult single tickets for the cable car cost EUR 16.50.

Bicycle

Many locals travel around the city by bike, since it's a cheap and easy way to get around this smallish city, despite the various hilly sections. There's a public bike rental system, run by the IVB transport company. You need to register online (registration fee: EUR 1) or call the hotline (number is advertised at each of the 13 stations). You can also download the app. The first and second 30 minutes cost EUR 1 each, after that it's EUR 3 for each additional hour.
