Best of Plasencia

Plasencia is full of people, and there are many tourists, most of which seem to be from other parts of Spain, since it is 2+ hours from Madrid and off the beaten routes. As a result its people are very genuine and friendly, and one can always talk with someone. This is to me the most noticeable point, the one I would come back for: people that value interactions more than money. But Placencia is also beautiful. The historical center is packed with well preserved churches and palacios, most of which can be visited for free, or for a very small fee. The center is also full of restaurants or cafes, which provide a free tapa with each drink or coffee, and additional ones for little money. Prices are very affordable.

We wanted to visit the Jewish Necropolis, but no one knew where it was. The Tourist Office had marked it on a map and we had to find a taxi to take us there. It was so interesting and peaceful there, but unfortunately very little has been done to attract visitors there---no markers or anything to guide walkers there. Also, we found only 3 plaques on Rua Zapateria with the names of Jews that had once lived there. I was looking for Ancestors. All of the churches were beautiful.

in the tourist center near the Plaza Mayor one can find the information on all historical buildings to visit (most of which are free) and on what other events are going on. The week I was there there were 5 free concerts (M-F) in honour of Santa Cecilia, and I heard that there are many saints so celebrated

Staying in a hotel or hostel by the historical centre is important because then one can visit the whole place by foot. There is the beautiful national park of Monfrague within 20 min by car, but I did not have the time to go there and do not know if there are buses

drinking a coffee with a free taste of local cuisine (tapa), sitting in the sun, enjyoing the scenery and the people coming and going, chatting with the bar tender on what is going on.

the pinchon (a drink with a free tapa) is a great way to taste local cuisine and local wine (one can also drink beer and spirits of course)

The only rare bird which we did not find was the Eagle Owl.
