Uffizi gallery, Palazzo Pitti gallery, Accademia gallery. Buy your tickets on the internet in order to avoid the long lines! Or buy the Florence Card! Duomo including climbing the cupola and the bell tower and visiting the beautiful Battistero - all for €10 altogether, in a single ticket. Also: Medici Chapel, Santa Croce church with the famous tombs, and Santa Maria Novella church. And lots more.... And there is beauty everywhere in Florence...

How can you enjoy the sights in Florence while avoiding the crowds?

Several museums offer a reservation service. You can book your ticket up to one day before visiting at additional 4 EUR added to the ticket price. Another alternative is buying Florence city card which entitles you to enter most of the attractions and skip the line. However, the cost is 72 EUR, so if you do not plan to visit many attractions, it is better to use the option with reservation.

My room was very accommodating. My only "con" was that the shower got clogged and my family and I had to turn the shower water off in between lathering up with soap and rinsing off so that the standing water in the shower would have a chance to drain out. Other than that it was a pleasant stay.

To stand before Machiavelli's and Michelangelo's grave monuments in Santa Groce and think on all the years, people have taken care of the place, gives magnificent feeling. There is some hope for mankind, if such individuals have lived, and the monuments are kept and cared for so long.

Spend the day wandering around the Uffizi and the Duomo (for a more enriching experience join a tour or two especially to gain access to exclusive areas, rent an audioguide or download a walking tour audioguide on your phone), have a coffee in Piazza Republica in the evening, followed by dinner at a trattoria nearby, then walk around to Ponte Vecchio to enjoy a live performance

Is there more to shopping in Florence than just brand-name stores?

We loved walking in the residential area just off the main tourist area and discovering small shops filled with Italian-made linens and silk clothes....very European and reasonable prices. Best way to avoid the crowds and experience the true Florence.

Not only Florence is the birthplace of Gucci, Pucci, Cavalli and Feragamo brands, but what is more, the area itself has a tradition in Leather goods which you can find in a vast range of prices and qualities. For good bargains (be ready to negotiate, don't go along with the first price you hear), go near Ponte Vecchio, on Via Por Santa Maria, in the outdoor market. A bigger outdoor market can also be found north of the Duomo. Same principle applies. If you want luxury leather goods, go to Via de Tornabuoni, where all the big fashion brands are located.

You can walk through the entire city center - the older part with all the history, art, museums, and architecture. Many of the streets are pedestrian only, or mostly pedestrian, as car traffic takes other routes. There are many little places to discover and explore as you walk. I would only do Florence on foot, not in a tour bus or car.

San Miniato al Monte - a steep climb but the no.12 bus stops there. A peaceful place containing some beautiful art. Not too many visitors, unlike some of the other churches in Florence. I enjoyed as well the walk back down into the city.

Where should people go if they don't want to eat in a tourist trap?

Jill, Canada

As soon as you cross to the south side of the Arno, prices for restaurants and gelaterias generally drop significantly but the quality is still excellent. It seems like they rely more on great food and service to survive rather than just being next to one of the big tourist attractions.

The Uffizi can be divided in two main areas... Italian Artists and the rest of the World. If I knew this I would perhaps have divided my time more equally between the two parts.

The Mall factory outlet is fantastic! Take shuttle bus from the central station costing 5 Euros/pax/trip. Ensure you claim taxes at The Mall itself. Spend less time claiming at customs/airport.

What's so impressive about the cathedrals in Florence?

Fred, South Africa

16 days ago Report

Every cathedral and church has a solid history to explore. The Duomo and the Dome and the Baptistry are incredible and beautiful. Check out Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Maria del Carmine. If you want to climb the Dome, a prebooked Duomo ticket will NOT allow you to bypass the long 2 hour queue for the Dome so you should get there at about 8 am before opening time.
