Opera National de Lyon

Opera National de Lyon is an opera company in Lyon, France which performs in the Nouvel Opera, a modernized version in 1993 of the original 1831 opera house. At the beginning of 1980s, out of age and not meeting the needs any more, the Opera had to be renewed. A competition for architects was thus launched and won in 1986 by Jean Nouvel. The new Opera of Lyon was inaugurated in May 1993 and is now part of the international architectural heritage. Outside the opera house, Nouvel only kept the outer walls. He also dug new underground levels and added a semi-cylindrical dome that is used by dancers. On the opera house front wall, 8 muses have been kept in place

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere is a basilica in Lyon. It was built with private funds between 1872 and 1884 in a dominating position in the city. The site it occupies was once the Roman forum of Trajan. Fourviere is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who saved the city of Lyon from a cholera epidemic sweeping Europe in 1823. Each year in early December (December 8, day of the Immaculate Conception), Lyon thanks the Virgin for saving the city by lighting candles throughout the city, in what is called the Fete des Lumieres or the Festival of Lights.

Haute cuisine is all well and good, but Lyon’s culinary scene revolves around old-fashioned home cooking. Bouchons Lyonnais are traditional taverns serving authentic local dishes, often washed down with hearty Beaujolais wine. Look out for the city’s speciality – delicate mousse-like pike dumplings known as quenelles de brochet.

Kas vietā Liona ļauj izdzīvot vēsturi?

Get the Lyon City Pass which opens doors to most of the sights and experiences. It includes a ride on the funicular to the cathedral and Roman ruins, other public transportation, museum admissions, a guided tour of the Midieval City where the guide literally opens doors to hidden passageways you would not find, explore or understand on your own. It also includes a boat tour on the Rhone and Saone rivers which run through the heart of the city.

The Old town at the foot of the Fourviere Hill is full of narrow alleys and streets which are abundant in interesting shops. By Place bellecour there is Voisin Chocolate shop which is a very tasty institution.

They are very interesting, easy to underestimate if you see a modest entrance way. However, beware that Lyon seems to almost shut down on a Monday. Plan around this if you are there for a full week.

Walk around, look up at the fine Paris in many ways. See modern additions from a river boat trip. vaicāja ceļotājiem...
