These people, the staff member at the Hostal Vill Toscana who got up at 4:00 a.m. to give us a bagged breakfast to take to the airport; the woman who let us sit on her stoop to watch the lenten procession in Antigua; the owner of Hotel San Sabastion who cried when our group left; the people who started schools for the disabled, deaf, a prenatal clinic; a home for indigent elderly and who had no outside help and gracefully accepted our donations.

Tikal offers tours all day, but the best times to go are at dawn and sunset. Fewer people visit then, and the animals are more visible. Photography is also a lot easier then. Find out when most people take tours in Antigua, Esquipulas, and the beaches of Puerto Barrios, and ask for smaller group options or off-hour tours.

Esquipulas is home to a beautiful basilica, of which there tend to be models in any hotel one might stay in. The church is a clean white on the exterior, and trimmed in gold inside. Depending on the season, more decorations and masses may be seen. Christmastime, for example, a beautiful Nativity is assembled just outside the main church doors.

Simply say no, and keep walking. Most vendors walk right up to one to offer goods, but a "no, thank you" and look away is enough to set them walking to the next browser again.
