How can you enjoy the sights in Budapest while avoiding the crowds?

Michael, United Kingdom

The main sights are easily visited on foot but the public transport network is excellent and very good value. The 72 hr pass covers all the networks and costs about 5 euros per day

Why would you recommend Budapest for food?

We visited several new restaurants where innovative Hungarian chefs are exploring the fusion of traditional Hungarian ingredients with the techniques and preparation styles of other European and non-European traditions, all very successfully. Delicious results!

How can you get the most authentic cultural experience in Budapest?

Richard, United Kingdom

If you like a nice beer or cocktail and enjoy art, then the ruin bars are highly recommended. I have seen nothing like it anywhere, or at least not on this scale. For instance, walking into the Szimpla Kert was like stumbling into a museum of curiosities both old and new. This, multi-floored, labyrinthine structure has a large courtyard and many rooms with different themes running through them. The invention and staggering imagination of the room designers evokes wonder and amusement in equal measure. I wish I had time to see all the ruin bars, not because I am an alcoholic (I'm not!), but because they are fascinating, friendly and popular places to be.

Where should people go if they don't want to eat in a tourist trap?

We found a little local bar in Kazinezy Utea - very close to other tourist trap options but this was a genuine local establishment (e.g. there were pictures on the wall of the owner socialising with his customers over many years). We had goulash soup and I have to say it was very tasty. I can't speak for the menu selection because we didn't look - this is a bar rather than a restaurant but great for a quieter and more genuine experience

What makes Budapest one of those classic city trip experiences?

Although our hotel was just outside the city centre and in a busy area it was quiet and peaceful so that after a busy day sightseeing we were able to relax. There are spas and Turkish baths in the city which I will try out next time!

What should you avoid to make the most of the nightlife in Budapest?

Colin, United Kingdom

5 days ago Report

Stick to well known and popular pubs and clubs such as the Morrison's chain, Instant etc, most areas in the city centre are perfectly safe and enjoyable. Best to avoid seeking nightlife in outlying districts because although there are a few decent places to be found it is probably to unsafe and risky to be worthwhile, there are some very dodgy districts further out!

Why are the monuments in Budapest noteworthy?

Ella, United Kingdom

Lots of very pretty and famous monuments and impressive buildings with history. The Chain Bridge was the first permanent crossing joining Buda and Pest, the two parts of the city.

What makes the people from Budapest so friendly? Tell us your story.

Richard, United Kingdom

Perhaps it is the fact that they live in beautiful surroundings and feel that, as ambassadors of their city, they are happy to promote it. Most of the people my group dealt with were friendly and keen to assist with our enquiries, or engage in general banter. Hungarian is hard for an Englishman like me to pronounce, so I had a go, which was treated sympathetically and sometimes with surprising playfulness.

What did you enjoy the most about Budapest pub crawls?

Eileen, Belgium

Alcohol is really cheap there! I'd recommend to go to "kert". Those are ruins pubs decorated with everything they can find. Really great for alternative subculture. The most popular is "Szimpla kert" but it's crowded in the week-ends.

I loved the szechenyi baths. The Gellert baths and hotel are also beautiful, however as we were there in Dec, some of the outdoor facilities at the Gellert were closed for work.

Describe your best tactic for travelling on the cheap in Budapest.

Use forint even though euros are accepted most everywhere. It's currently 1 EUR to 300 HUF +/- 5 HUF. Therefore when quoted 290 HUF or 1 EUR, you're saving a few pennies each time just paying in HUF. Depending on how much spending you're doing or how long you're there, it'll add up. Also - get the 24 hour travel card rather than the 10 ticket bundle on BKK public transport. It is much cheaper and you don't have to worry about mapping out your entire day. It allows for more spontenaity which is perfect for Budapest.
