Chaotic, dirty & smoggy - although was great to experience it for a brief time. The beach was the dirtiest I've ever seen - beyond a nightmare. So sad to see such a beautiful place so badly treated.

This end of Kuta on main street was very busy, opposite Discovery and easy to walk to markets and Mataharis and Waterbom park. Lovely lunch at the Kartika Plaza Hotel overlooking the ocean... the sushi was superb!

Been in Kuta 15 years ago and comeback to it is a desolation too many too many if you understand what I mean . It is not what it was, I can understand but now it is too much. The paradise is gone. May be the Fidgi will be better?

Popular neighbourhoods in Kuta

Kartika Plaza

123 properties

Family-friendly frolics. This area abounds with good, clean fun. Splash down at Waterbom Bali, a stunning water park which echoes with the delirious squeals of contented kiddies as they zoom down slides. Giggle over a game of pool at Paradiso Kuta, or go for strike on its bowling lanes. Dim sum lovers shouldn’t miss Golden Lotus’ Sunday brunch.

Downtown Kuta

121 properties

The centre of the action. Downtown Kuta is a dizzying swirl of mopeds and tourists. Keep your wits about you as you weave through the throng. On Poppies Street, zig-zag past sun-scorched tourists who sport shop-fresh Bintang Beer-branded vests. For a taste of the Kuta party scene, make a beeline for Legian Street’s pumping dance floors.

Tuban

45 properties

Tickle your taste buds in Tuban. This area is chock-full of eateries, especially on Jalan Raya Tuban Road. Here, the sweet scent of cooked goodies hangs in the air, and pull you in several directions at once. Slurp on a bowl of tangy “bubur” (rice porridge) from Laota, or go rogue with a “nasi lalapan” (rice with fried meat) from a street stall.

By Pass Ngurah Rai Kuta

14 properties

Zoom! Most people in this district are travelling at around fifty miles an hour. That’s because it’s built around Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, a 2-mile road that hums with traffic from dawn till dusk. Whizz down to Mal Bali Galeria for a splurge, then tuck into a healthy lunch at Dijon Café Bali. End the day with a groove in bouncing Boshe Nightclub.

Local tips for Kuta

Odyssey Surf School
Firman by Firman

Firman is the strong, silent type. He loves the great outdoors and curating his Instagram feed.

Odyssey Surf School is probably one of the best surf schools in Bali. In my own experience, the instructors there are very friendly and professional. They offer a wide range of surfing class from groups to private one-on-one lessons. I'd recommend getting a private lesson.

Pia Legong
Andi by Andi

Andi is a born entertainer who's passionate about making people laugh. He also loves a good massage.

My favourite thing to bring from Bali whenever I visit my family in Jakarta is Pia Legong. Pia is a Balinese pie filled with either chocolate or cheese. Pias are everywhere in Bali, but I think Pia Legong is the best one and pretty much everyone's favourite!

Ariko is a coffee snob and a professional island hopper with an undying love for pizza.

My favourite coffee spot in the world is this little coffee shop on Jalan Dewi Sri. They have awesome range of coffee and each one is oh-so-awesome! My favourite one is their Iced Vietname Drip. Trust me, you'll never get this good a coffee for such a cheap price anywhere else!

Erly by Erly

Erly is a Javanese girl whose life dream is to marry motorcyclist Marc Márquez.

During the weekend I always like to hang out with my friends at Pod Chocolate Cafe 7 Dessert Bar. It's such a cosy, quiet, and nice place to catch up with the latest gossip with your crew. And their chocolates, cakes, and other chocolate-based menu are to die for!

Benesari Street
Dayu by Dayu

Straight-talking Dayu is always up for all kinds of adventure, as long as it makes sense to her.

I love a bit of people-watching. The best place to do this in Kuta is at one of the bars or cafés along Benesari Street, while enjoying a cold beer and munching on some snacks. My favourite place is Cafe Lokal, which has a cosy atmosphere and amazing tuna salad!

Suset at Kuta Beach
Michael by Michael

Michael is mad about cars and spicy food. He loves Bali's sunsets.

I think the best way to spend your time in Kuta is to do what it's famous for - sunset watching. Kuta Beach is my favourite spot. I just bring my beach sarong and lay it on the sand. Then, I sit back with a cold beer in hand and watch as the sky turns glowing pink.

Sea Turtle Conservation Centre on Kuta Beach
Anggi by Anggi

Sweet Anggi is a former swimming athlete who enjoys sinking her teeth into all kinds of food.

One my son's favourite places in Kuta is the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre on Kuta Beach. He loves to interacts with the turtles, and the staff there are very friendly. It's a great place for kids to learn about nature. Sometimes they even help to release baby turtles into the sea.

Alleycats
Tedy by Tedy

Quiet and smiley Tedy transforms into a shopping machine once he gets inside a shopping centre.

Usually my friends and I start our Saturday night in Kuta at Alleycats. It's a restaurant by day and a dive bar by night where you meet backpackers from around the world. Their awesome concoction, called Double-Double, is quite legendary and it only costs IDR 25,000. It's pretty potent!

Rama Krisna Souvenir Shop
Fifin by Fifin

Fifin is a former singer who still loves to belt out a tune every once in a while.

Whenever I have friends visiting from outside the island and wants to get souvenirs, I always take them to Krisna Souvenir Shop. It's a one-stop shop for all your trinket needs. They sell everything from snacks, paintings, T-shirts, to some unique handicrafts made in Bali.

Melasti Ceremony at Kuta Beach
Mira by Mira

Mira is a gentle Balinese lady whose twin passions are nature and online shopping.

On the day before the annual Nyepi or Day of Silence Celebration I always go and see the Melasti Ceremony at Kuta Beach. It's where all Balinese Hindus in Kuta gather to give thanks for the past year. There is traditional gamelan music, and they throw offerings to the gods into the sea.

Transport

Kuta transport

Air - I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport

Ngurah Rai is the main air hub for all of Bali. To get into town from the airport, you pretty much need to get a taxi of some sort. The airport operates its own taxi service from a taxi rank just outside the terminal. You’ll need to agree on a price before getting in. The trip to the town centre takes around 15-20 minutes and around IDR 50,000.

Bus

The Sarbagita bus system connects Kuta with Nusa Dua and Sanur. The fleet of buses is fairly small, so it can take up to an hour for any given bus to arrive. Each journey costs around IDR 3,500, and you can pay in cash on the bus. You can spot them by the cartoon man on the side and the word “Sarbagita” in yellow lettering.

Bus

The dinky Kura-Kura buses are a good option if you’re travelling around town, or to the surroundings. They’re instantly recognisable with their green and yellow paintwork, with turtle-shell markings on the roof. You can buy tickets at DFS Bus Bay at Mal Bali Galleria, or on the bus. If you’re travelling within Kuta, tickets cost around IDR 20,000, but trips out of town can cost up to IDR 80,000.

Taxi

Blue Bird is Kuta’s most well-known and trusted taxi company. You can call the company to arrange a pick-up, or download their app and do it through that. Be aware that, because of Blue Bird’s popularity, other non-licensed cabs will try to imitate their colouring. Make sure that your taxi has a “Blue Bird Group” sign in the windscreen to avoid wild prices. Also bear in mind that the taxis tend not to have card machines, so have the cash ready.

Car

If you’re planning on travelling outside the city, hiring a car is a decent option. You can hire a car with a driver (usually around IDR 500,000 per day), or drive yourself. Driving in the city is generally not advisable, since there are many narrow streets, traffic can be quite chaotic and there is not much space to park. If you do park on the street, sometimes you’ll find unofficial parking attendants who charge around IDR 30,000 to help you park.

Motorcycle

Kuta is a motorbike-friendly city, since a lot of the streets are very narrow, and street-side parking is so much easier than with a car. It’s not advisable for first-timers though, as traffic can be quite unpredictable. Always make sure you wear a helmet and keep your license on you at all times. Motorbike rental costs somewhere between IDR 60,000 and 100,000 per day, depending on the model.
