Things to do in La Spezia
San Giorgio Castle
La Spezia is best known as the gateway to Cinque Terre, but this historic city has oodles of charm of its own. For an overview of all it has to offer, head to San Giorgio Castle. There’s a steep walk up to this hilltop stronghold, but it’s worth it for the stunning panorama of the old town and bay below.
Porto Venere Regional Nature Park
Rugged cliffs, hidden grottos and glittering azure waters make this natural beauty spot hard to beat. Porto Venere’s lush Mediterranean landscape is home to a plethora of endangered plants and animals, while its beautiful islands have inspired artists and poets for generations. Beneath the waves, the marine reserve is a wonderland of sunken caves and vibrant sea life.
Thaon di Revel Bridge
Reaching from Mirabello Marina to the main promenade, this suspended structure cuts a striking shape against the La Spezia skyline. Stroll over to enjoy waterfront views and get creative with some angled shots of the construction.

Exceptional
Great food, lovely people, not touristy. Cool Apero scene, good value for money restaurants. You can walk everywhere, use the train for the Cinque Terre. Parking tricky. Fab shopping too.

after visiting the cinq terres we quickly realized that that La Spezia was the best location to be to visit the area. It was a lively town easily visited on foot with good food and easy access to public transport and train station.

Very good
Very charateristic Harbour city and students city. Good restaurants but you need to reserve first otherwise you serius risk to end dining in a bar. The city is 50 minutes from Cinque Terre.

La Spezia itself doesn't have much but it is a great jumping off point to Cinque Terre. The train station has closed the luggage storage, so plan accordingly.

Recommendations for La Spezia

The main shopping area where we stayed was on a long street which was free of cars. This made it relaxing to shop, walk to the castle and even down to the waters edge. It seemed like the best parts of the city were within walking distance, probably only about 15-20 minutes to walk from the train station to the water via the shopping street. The shopping was not high-end like Milan, but more affordable.

Booking.com asked travellers...

Why would you recommend La Spezia for food?

We chose la Spezia for its location and proximity to the Cinque Terra only. For this it was excellent. Harbour walk was really nice but really the town is quite drab. Unfortunately we had bad weather while there which didn't help.

La Spezia is very close to the Cinque terre, hence serves as a perfect base to explore the Cinque terre especially if you want to avoid the high costs of staying in the Cinque terre

Unforgettable scenery in 5 terre, especially on those hiking trails.

It was easy to get around by bus and it was cheap.

Prepare comfort cloths and shoes.
