The Hikes between towns range from 45 mins to 2 hours, bring water, comfortable shoes, and a camera. Plan to take the entire day, and plan your departure from the last town around the train schedule... there are no other ways to get back to Monterosso

Being from Australia the beaches were nothing like we have at home in that you don't get sand, you get lots of pebbles. In saying this though the water was beautiful. It was around cool, but not cold and beautiful and clear, you could see for miles. You have to pay to use most beaches but the free ones are okay and you can still from the paying ones.

Beach-side cafes and foccacerias. The hotel was an oasis as during the day the resort is busy.

We observed a fisherman wheel a large swordfish from his boat, straight up to the restaurant. You can't get any fresher than that!

A lot of famous postcard like photos were taken from a hiking route (vernazza - monterosso al mare). You pay 7.5 euros for the entrance of the trail, walk from Vernazza bay area for about 20 mins towards Monterosso al mare then you will reach the photo spot!!(Promise you it really looks exactly like the post card!) All the other easier hiking trails were not open due to maintenance. Another good way is to take the ferry, photo of Riomaggiore from the ferry is amazing.

The pebble beaches are wonderful! No sand to get stuck everywhere. The pebbles are smooth and warm, soothing to walk and lay on. There is no sand to get stirred up in the water, so the water remains clear and beautiful.

There are so many bars, cafe's and restaurants in Monterosso, just choose a different style each night. We went from the ones that looked upmarket to those that looked basic. They were all good - their point of difference made them worthwhile.

I would highly recommend walking the high paths between the five towns. These paths take you to the most amazing villages tucked into the steep hillsides. The produce grown and the ancient terracing in which vineyards are still in operation are a highlight. The terrain is demanding but very doable

Monterosso is absolutely breathtaking! Pebbly beaches, clear water. The beaches are crowded on the weekends, but the weekdays are much less so. Buy a "blanket" on the beach for 10 Euros!

We discovered really wonderful wines from the Liguria region and always for amazing value. On the Cinque Terre trail walk you can even see some of the vineyards where the grapes are grown and witness some impressive farming in tough conditions on the hot mountainsides.
