Matera has a great local bread that is dark and crusty on the outside and salty and light inside--delicious. The local cuisine includes a lot of peppers that are native to the area, meat and unique spices. Matera is also famous for orechiette!

The spa and underground cave pool at the Locanda Di San Martino is pure decadence. Floating in the mineral water, lit by this otherworldly blue light was the ultimate in blissed out relaxation and the assorted other amenities set in a series of Roman bath styled rooms were very well-kept and relaxing as well.

The people are particularly friendly and helpful. When we arrived we drove into a parking garage to park, and the employees recognized that we were really not walking distance to our hotel. They used their own phone to call the hotel and let us stay in the garage free of charge until our host arrived to guide us to the property. They were kind and went out of their way to help us. The same can be said of our host and his sister. They were kind and offered us assistance freely with an honest concern for our happiness and well-being.
