My family and I were at Georgetown, Penang, right at the last day of the worship of the Jiu Huang Ye, and were there to witness the devotees' sending off of the Jiu Huang Ye at night. Was an eye-opening experience witnessing the rites and rituals, with the devotees serving as mediums for the various deities walking with spears poked through their cheeks.

A walk through historic Georgetown brings the British era to life and blends well with the modern administration. There is a strong movement to restore and improve the area. Walking through this area allows travellers to appreciate the diversity of Malaysia and it's history from the British era through Today.

I love how night markets in George Town are so organised. Seating is arranged by the "bar", so in order to get a table where you could enjoy the variety of food offered by food stall vendors, you must order a drink from the bar. Once you have a place to sit down, you are free to order as much as you want as you stroll through the food stalls.
This is great! Every time dining in a night market you get to sample a variety of local food. Also, food portions are small (and relatively inexpensive) in George Town, so you get to try a lot of different things at once!

The crowds are not that big, so you can do it everywhere. The Murals, however, are a bit busy, but that is understandable, since that is one of the most characteristic things of Georgetown

We chanced upon this unique cafe boasting of Jawi Peranakan culture. The cafe was adorned with various Jawi Peranakan relics and old pictures of the Jawi Peranakan in Georgetown. The owners of the cafe themselves were descendants of the Jawi Peranakans there, and they whipped up fabulous food. My family enjoyed their Jawi Laksas tremendously. I had Jawi Bamieh, which was lamb curry stew served with very nice thick buttered toast slices which were superb when dipped into the stew.
