What seafood experience in Oban is still on your mind?

The langoustines and small lobster thingies are freshly caught from the waters around Oban. They are sweet and so delicious. I cannot eat farmed seafood & especially prawns (something in them causes my throat to itch and swell up), but the seafood in Oban gave me absolutely no problems at all. Say NO to farmed seafood and YES to ocean-caught seafood. I am willing to pay more anyday, for ocean-caught seafood. As someone very sensitive to such things, I could see a huge difference in the quality of food that I was eating.

The scenery around Oban took our breath away on the first two days of our stay, thanks to the wonderful weather. One the wet days the scenery was powerful.
Looking west from Oban, the sunset over the islands, was amazing.

Ferry trip to Mull, although raining (and Oban does a fair bit of this due to it's location), appreciate the natural beauty and surroundings, and when the Sun does put in an appearance, wow, everything changes.........................

Lots of very good places in which to eat. Reasonable prices to suit the style of the establishment.

Why do people say Oban can be seen best by foot?

Anonymous, Unknown location

6 days ago Report

Oban is definitely best seen by foot as driving is a nightmare. On one occasion we wanted to go to a a supermarket that looked about 100 yards away - thanks to the road network and the very helpful (not) signage, it took ten minutes of exploration.

Plenty of choices along the 'back' streets, plus buy and excellent picnic at the bakers (or chocolate factory) and walk along the shore or up the hills.

If the weather is good, find a seat on the sea front and relax. If the weather is poor go and have a nice meal as you will not be able to see anything!

In the Wild life centre, we were fascinated by all the creatures, but especially the seals who were variously recovering from injury. The Canadian otters, being diurnal, were highly amusing with their antics. In the wild - the seals, and once we saw dolphins, plus the sea birds

Avoid crowds? 1. by sitting on a ship's top deck in freezing, but bright weather - we were the only folk up there. 2. by visiting Dunolli Castle, and museum. 3. by visiting in winter, or out of the peak season.

The best thing about shopping in Oban is that you spend nothing. Everything you might want to buy is cheaper elsewhere and there is nothing unique to Oban.

Short and long cruises on the CalMac ferries to and around the islands - well cared for, good food especially on the 'Isle of Arran'! Also the small 'seal' trips when available in Summer.

At the same time Oban is a busy working port, sustaining the Scottish Islands, but also a quiet place of water, sky, spectacular views. The town itself has interesting buildings from many eras, especially the Victorian hotels, plus a well designed modern Leisure centre with its pools, sports hall, exercise rooms and relaxing café.
