The Machu Picchu site does not have any modern conveniences like toilets or shops on it. These are located outside the gate so try to bring what you need in a little backpack, although there are restrictions. Be prepared to walk a lot and climb even more. Protect against Mosquitos and the sun. Be warned of 56 soles return bus fare from Aguas Calientes For Wayna/Huayna Picchu I do not like heights, but this climb was rewarding in many ways, and I would advise everyone to experience it. Most of the climb is reasonable, with large steps and wire rails to hold. Some steps are high and some are a little awkward. The last 200metres approx are very steep, narrow and daunting, and the return 200m section is slightly worse, but with a bit of grit it is doable. Verbal support is also important. The return journey takes about 3 hours normally. Bring mosquito repellant, suncream, plenty water (it should be in a flask but this is not enforced), and some fruit or energy bars to eat at the top. Also a towel for the inevitable sweat. Try to minimize the weight in a bag, and make sure that you can have two hands free at all times. I went off season (December) on the 0700hrs trek and was stripped to a tshirt very soon, despite the fog, which cleared gradually. There is a tiny cave at the top which requires crawling on all fours for a few feet and then squeezing yourself out while twisting your body as you exit it vertically, but nobody had a problem. The ultimate peak has a small vertical ladder and you climb onto a rock. The comraderie is fantastic throughout. There is an alternative route to descend to see caves but that adds an extra hour plus. I only saw one member of staff on the whole Huayna climb, so don't expect any assistance from them, but there is usually no need. Make sure your camera is charged and has lots of memory. Each step presents another amazing view.

Be sure to buy your tickets ahead of time! They limit access to the park and the two mountains that you can climb. I recommend hiring a 2 hour guide at the entrance (make sure he/she can speak your language fairly well). This cost us 120 sols for 3 people (40 sols each) which was roughly $30 US dollars total or $10/each. It was definitely worth it. Our guide was so good we tipped him 30 sols. After our guided tour we climbed Montana (the larger of the two mountians) which was basically climbing up steps all the way. It was physically challenging, but all of us made it (my husband and I are 53 and 54 and our daughter is 20). We took lots of breaks. It took us an hour and 45 minutes up, and an hour and half down. It was worth it! You experience a 360 degree view. SPECTACULAR! Once we got back down we still had plenty of time to roam around the ruins.

Quin impacte creus que té el turisme a Machu Picchu?

Most of this city seemed to be designed to sell anything and everything to tourists (which I think is expected when it's this major of an attraction). I would really love to see this city explore more of its cultural heritage and less of the tourist trap that it seems to be.

We arrived there as soon as the gates opened at 6 am. We also travelled there in early December. This kept the crowds low but the weather was still great for us.

The way and conditions of living of the people, specially of the indigenous people. In generally, very friendly people.

It's astounding. It's hard to imagine how it was built.

They still don't know much about the incas!
