Krakow itself is a beautiful town, full of history. The old town is typically European, with cobbled streets and quirky buildings. Main square is home to probably one of the most beautiful cathedrals of the world (in terms of interior). Besides, Krakow is strongly connected with more recent history, being home to one of the most famous concentration and death camps Auschwiz-Birkenau. Entry is free, and it's easy to go on your own by local train.

Take advantage of one of the many golf buggy tours offered. Well worth the money just to get a feel for the City without the effort of walking all around - especially in the really hot weather. Gives you the chance to see a bit if you are on a tight time scale and perhaps spot the places you want to spend more time in.

How well restored were the castles in Kraków?

The city has a lot of history and has been the capital of Poland as well as belonging to a number of different countries over the centuries, including Poland, Prussia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This has resulted in the city having a lot of monuments in different styles and from different eras for various reasons. A must see is the (relatively new) bronze dragon statue (the symbol of Krakow) that shoots fire every few minutes outside the lower walls of the castle next to the river (you'll naturally pass it if you visit the dragons cave as you leave the castle).

Wawel Castle, though the De Vinci painting was a disappointment as is was so far away from the barrier.
Collegium Maius was interesting as were many of the churches and synagogues in the town. Great place to just walk around including the Planty - as it is a very human scale city.
The Klezmer concerts are worth going to if you like a melange of music: classic/jazz and folk very professionally played.

The tourist info office provide free maps of the city and everything is easily accessible on foot. The tram is great for anything on the outskirts that you wish to see.

There are free guided city walks in the centre outside the Church in the square

What makes Kraków one of those classic city trip experiences?

It's a beautiful little town, best for walking, photography and finding hidden little corners which are meant for locals rather than tourists. These include plenty of bars and restaurants in the Jewish quarter which are far better quality and lower prices than cafes around the main square. If you have some extra days in Krakow, I recommend to do side trips as well: essential Auschwiz (approx. an hour by local train), optional salt mines (about 30 min by local train), and Zakopane (about 2 hours by bus).

Go to Chimera (Just off the main square) for amazing salad bar/buffet in a covered atrium-style courtyard. The freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies are delicious. Food is predominantly vegetarian but don't let that put you off; we're not veggie but never miss the opportunity to grab lunch here.

What should you avoid to make the most of the nightlife in Kraków?

Avoid the young people on the main square who are tirelessly handing out flyers and trying to convince you that THEIR random club is the best - probably the most annoying thing in the city. This is coming from a guy who has been to Krakow ten times. Don't fall for any of it and go to the place that suits you, even if you have to walk around the city five times. Pretty-looking girls will also try to convince you to visit THEIR random "gentlemen's club", which is almost certainly named after a type of precious stone, is "five-star", is "VIP", is this and that but certainly not cheap or worth your time.
