Things to do in Albufeira

Fisherman's Beach

Popular areas

Not long ago, Fisherman’s Beach lived up to its name. Every day at dawn, humble fishing vessels would glide gently onto the sand and rugged fisherman would unload their catch. Today, it’s swapped fishing nets for volleyball nets, and bait for bikinis. Flop onto the sand among the tourist hordes as they fry in the sun. Then tuck into a slap-up seafood dinner on the beachfront.

Pau da Bandeira Belvedere

Popular areas

Wind-formation is power. A cross-shaped mast stands on this cliff-top like a nautical crucifix. It used to signal wind direction to fishermen out at sea. Though the fishermen are all but gone, the mast remains as a reminder of the town’s fishy roots. Today, the viewpoint is popular with locals, who come to sit on benches or nab the best views of Albufeira’s firework displays.

Nossa Senhora da Orada Hermitage

“The face that launch’d a thousand ships”. Well, maybe not quite that many. Every August, this convent is the scene of a centuries-old ritual. The statue of Our Lady of Orada is carried out of the convent and paraded through the streets, before a fleet of fishing boats chaperone her on a route out to sea. The home-spun pageantry of this flotilla is quite a sight.

Albufeira Marina

Welcome to Toytown! The apartment blocks around this marina are painted in nursery-school pastel shades. Even the shape of the windows recalls infant puzzles – one triangle, one square, one circle and so on. It all lends the harbour an air of fantastical nostalgia. Grab an ice cream, dangle your legs off a jetty and stroll down Albufeira Marina’s memory lane.

The Strip - Albufeira

Popular areas

Aeons of neon. During the day, the shops on this street dazzle with fluorescent inflatable beach gear. Once night falls, the garish glow of flickering neon announces bar after pumping bar. Fresh-faced revellers glow with beach-fresh sunburn as they swig shots in bars like Reno’s and La Bamba. This strip doesn’t tease so much as shove it in your face. Join the madness.

Sao Rafael Beach

Popular areas

A hidden gem. This little beach is tucked away behind cliff crags. These ancient, pock-marked strata of limestone create funky formations that encircle the sand. The cliffs are in a state of constant erosion from the lapping waves, which carve ever more indentations and holes. Pack up your towel and sneak down to Sao Rafael, but keep it to yourself or word will get out!

Algarve Shopping Center

Shopping areas

Shopaholics can never take a real holiday from the urge to splurge. This open-air shopping centre is here to fulfil those retail needs while you’re in the Algarve. Jazz up your night on the Albufeira Strip with some spanking new clobber or shiny diamonds. The high-street brands run the gamut, from Zara to Levi’s to Swarovski. Just make sure you’ve got space in your luggage!

Pine Cliffs Golf Course

Golf courses

The fragrant pine trees, the craggy red cliffs – the clue’s very much in the name at this golf course. With lush fairways flanked by trees and the shimmering ocean below, it’s a sublime setting for a round or two. Pine Cliffs’ highlight is the sixth hole, where you need to tee off a full 198 metres – across a ravine – to reach the green. Best pack that extra set of balls.

Zoomarine Park

When it comes to bucket lists, swimming with dolphins always seems to make the cut. Zoomarine Park offers you the chance to chalk this much-coveted experience off of yours! It’s part-aquarium, part-water park, combining all the best watery pursuits in one fun-filled place. Clap along with sea lions and gawp at seahorses, then pop on your swimmers for some flume-based frolics!

Accommodation near Zoomarine Park
Falesia Beach

Popular areas

Fancy a bike ride? Point those handlebars towards Falésia! This beach is on Albufeira’s top cycling route, which winds down the coast from the Old Town. It runs through tiny whitewashed villages and pine copses, alongside the shimmering ocean. At the end of it lies the beach itself, lurking beneath a copper-coloured Martian crag of a cliff. Rent a bike and make a day of it.

Praia do Peneco

Just a few steps from Albufeira’s old town, Praia do Peneco is the perfect seaside stop-off for city trippers. Its fine golden sands and crystal-clear waters have earned coveted ‘Blue Flag’ status, while a lift and ramps make it accessible to all. The rocky passageway running from the town square to the shore gives this beach its nickname of ‘Praia do Túnel’.

Accommodation near Praia do Peneco
Praia de São Rafael

Clean, sheltered waters and soft honey-hued sand make this Blue Flag beach a firm favourite among Albufeira locals. Fringed by golden limestone cliffs, Praia de São Rafael is home to bustling bars and popular waterfront restaurants, while hidden coves and fascinating rock formations provide some welcome peace and quiet.

Accommodation near Praia de São Rafael
Praia dos Pescadores

Beaches don’t get much more central than Praia dos Pescadores, which hugs the shore next to Albufeira’s old town. A few painted boats remain as a quaint reminder of how Fisherman’s Beach got its Portuguese name, but nowadays its soft golden sands are lined with loungers and parasols.

Accommodation near Praia dos Pescadores
Praia da Coelha

Tiny shells stud the soft sands of this sheltered Algarve beach, tucked away on a secluded stretch of coastline west of Albufeira town. For sun-seekers, Praia da Coelha is worth the trip for its crystal clear waters and laid-back vibe, while more active types can clamber around its limestone cliffs, coves and caves.

The nucleus of old Albufeira. Old Town’s whitewashed houses slope up from Fisherman’s Beach to cloak the hillside. The narrow streets abound with quaint seafood joints and cake shops. Recommendations for Albufeira

If you want a relaxed lunch on one of the most beautiful beaches in the area make your way to evaristo beach. there is a beach bar and also a more upmarket restaurant. we had a chicken salad and fries and a bottle of white wine in the most beautiful glasses overlooking the beach for about 15 uros. my husband and myself allways pick our perfect moment of the holiday and this was one of ours this year.

More stairs or escalators. We got caught with rocky promentaries and the tide was in on the way back to our hotel. It would be a shame to change the landscape to allow access all along the beaches so work with what is there but make it more walker friendly.

Restaurante Olhos D'Agua, Restaurante Duarte, Adega do Ze, O Assador are my top picks right in the village of Olhos d'Agua

Sea,and horse riding. Also digging and building sand castles, tennis football age 8 boys

Long hours of hot sun and blue skies combined with cooling breeze

The strip if your over 40 and go try the square in the old town asked travellers...

Why would you recommend Albufeira for food?

Fresh fish, bread, olives and vegetables.

Clean and beautiful view on cliffs...

Albufeira transport

Air - Faro International Airport

To get to Albufeira from Faro Airport, you have 2 options. The cheapest is by bus, which involves 2 legs. You need to get the number 16 bus into Faro City Centre, which takes 15 minutes and costs EUR 2.22. From the centre, there's another bus to Albufeira. Tickets cost EUR 4.70 and the trip takes between 30 and 55 minutes. Alternatively, taxis cost EUR 41-55 and take about 30 minutes. There's a taxi rank right outside the airport terminal.

If you're going on a day trip out of town, train travel is a relatively cheap option. Although Albufeira-Ferreiras Station is located 5 km out of town, it offers connections to the rest of the country, including Faro, Lisbon and Porto. There are also regional trains that go to towns in the Algarve. It's recommended to book your tickets in advance, as sometimes CP (the train company) offers discounts as high as 40%.

Albufeira's bus network is called Giro. It has 5 colour-coded routes, which all start and finish at the Bus Terminal at Caliços (located 2 km from the centre). Single trips cost EUR 1.40 and day trips cost EUR 4, giving you unlimited travel on any of the lines. If you're using the bus over a period of time, it might be best to get a rechargeable bus card, available for EUR 3 from the EVA bus terminals at Avenida da Liberdade and Caliços.

Taxis are an easy way to get from A to B in Albufeira, especially after a night out once the bus service has stopped. With 24 taxi ranks around the town, they're easy to find. Alternatively, you can hail one in the street or call to book one. Try to make sure you have cash on you, as not all cabs have a card machine.

With the stunning Algarve region at your fingertips, you're really best off renting a car if you want to explore. Albufeira's town centre isn't great for drivers, as most of the streets are either very narrow or for pedestrians only. However, outside the centre there are various car parks where you can park for a fee.
