It has a special energy. We were there during the Carnival, so it was a bit crowded but still amazing. You can find a spot near one of many bars on the beach so you can hear their music. Water is nice. Most definitely worth visiting.

How can you enjoy the sights in Rio de Janeiro while avoiding the crowds?

There is no way to avoid the crowded streets of Rio. except maybe after midnight
I took one and half hour to get back to the airport in a cab . it is only a 27km distance which tells you that we were going at a speed of 18 km / hour !! it was nerve wrecking.
there are public bicycles for rent if you want to enjoy beach cruising or shopping
Buses are always available and also cheap as Taxis .
Be careful of the taxi drivers, they ave tendency to take you in round trips before getting you to your destination so if you have a navigator on your phone turn it on and let the driver listen to it and realize that you are studying the road as he drives.

The landscape and vegetation is very nice to watch; the green environment, the hilly undulations and the beaches. I was impressed with the way the people have preserved their natural resources and merge architecture into the natuaral landscape.

You can walk on the beach or a sidewalk and you don't have to avoid bike riders or skaters because there is a separate bike lane. So I don't know how they could improve walking on the beaches.

Common sense. Don't leave the hotel with stuff you won't need. Leave documents behind since nobody asks you for them. And go to the popular spots, don't go discovering the city by yourslef at night. Lapa from Wednesdays to Sundays is the place to be,

The cable car ride to the Sugar Loaf mountain is incredibly impressive. Best taken towards the end of the day so you can watch the skies gradually darken and the lights of the city (with the clusters of softer lights from the favelas spreading over the hillsides). The landscaping towards the back of the Sugar Loaf is also worth wandering through with most people lingering around the attractions and city facing side.

The nearby, small bay at the start of the ride is also a good alternative to the packed Copacobana and Ipanema beaches.

Other views from the either the national park to the Cristo Redentor statue are also worth the trip.

There is a great spot on the rocks at the end of Ipanema beach (at the Copacabana end). Grab a coconut or a beer from one of the many vendors wandering around and enjoy!
