What makes Santiago one of those classic city-trip experiences?

Thijs, United States of America

It doesn't. The city of Santiago was not a great highlight of our trip, in part because we already had plans to go to the staples just outside of Santiago (wine country and Valpraiso) on our own.

You can go tho Cerro Santa Lucía... From mon-fri, in the noon, you can see an actual fire of cannon from the top of the hill, in a little castle there. The view is amazing. And in the bottom there's one of the best cultural souvenir shops i've seen in Santiago.

What's the best way to make the most of Santiago by foot?

Take a hotel in the city-centre. Santiago is a big place, but the main city-centre area is small enough to cover on foot. There's lots of parks, gardens, and hills, so enough places to get a respite from the sun, or a small siesta under the trees

There are lots of things to see and do and it never seemed to be crowded anywhere - a very pleasant holiday. Taking the bus and the Metro near the apt was very easy and convenient.

What's the secret to sampling all the diverse food Santiago has to offer?

Jonathan, Canada

You absolutely HAVE to do Peruvian food (for some reason Chileans love Peru) and sushi. All the fish for sushi in Japan come now from Chile (because of Fukushima), so the sushi down in Santiago is to die for.
