Town centre is well served but a bit grim with many establishments closed down and boarded up. My feeling is that the council are not in tune with the town and are more self- serving than dedicated to it's prosperity and miss much potential within.

The #66 bus is key to the Vale of the White Horse, with stops in Shrivenham and Faringdon - both with connections to the Uffington White Horse/Dragon Hill - and terminus in Oxford, where one can spend a day enjoying architecture, excellent dining and museums. British Rail also connects to Bath, Salisbury and Gloucester. National Express coaches also run multiple routes through Swindon to connections all over GB.

Swindon has a less than savoury reputation within the UK, sort of a psychic twin to the state of New Jersey: it's industrial, therefore it's bad. Swindon does not get a fair shake in my view. Swindon was a major hub for the Great Western Railway and its museum is here. Swindon is also a home for British archives, a research centre for academics the world over.

What did you discover about the museums in Swindon that wasn't in the guidebooks?

Told by a taxi driver that the idea of NHS started at a small building that belonged to Brunel. Interesting story.

Close by to Swindon is the Uffington White Horse and Uffington Castle, about a 15 minute drive from the Stratton-St-Margaret section of town. Further away, about 30 minutes, is World Heritage Site Avebury, or the medieval market town of Marlborough. Stonehenge is within 45 minutes, with very easy access to the new visitor's centre. Old Sarum and Salisbury are another 15 minutes from there. In the opposite direction, the Roman city of Cirencester is within 25 minutes, again very easy access of the A road.

There is a memorial to a Spitfire test pilot who went crashed in the Old Town in December 1941. The architecture in Old Town still retains some of its medieval origins, although much was overbuilt in the early 19th century. On Victoria Hill there are shops and some small, independently run restaurants.
