I spent very little time in Joburg, but I didn't feel anywhere near as "unsafe" as everyone talks about. I just took an Uber everywhere, and went to the gym and restaurants. I was mainly there as a base to visit other parts of South Africa.

Very Good
I was driven around by friends in Johannesburg so my movements where taken care of but if you using public transport it can be a nightmare Dinner we were eating at Faircity Mapungubwe

Exceptional
Experiencing the best that Jo'burg has to offer requires careful guidance, particularly if one wants to explore 'off the beaten track'. If achieved, then the experience may well be unequalled, especially in terms of cultural creativity!

Exceptional
Busy city with a very western feel in most parts. Lovely forest views from the tops of buildings. Sandton Mall & Mall of Africa very upmarket. Rosebank Roof Market on Sundays give you that African flair & of course Vilakazi Streetbin Soweto has a real African feel.

Very Good
It was only a short trip for now, but it has some very nice corners. Either nice big shopping malls where to get everything or little pubs to enjoy a few liters of beer.

Booking.com asked travelers...

Why do you recommend Johannesburg for food?

The Food Scene in Joburg was vibrant and very happening with restaurants offering diverse range of food and new creative chefs on the scene. Even more exceptional, were the lower than expected prices which provided an outstanding dining value that rivals most other places in the world.

Amazing how the gold rush took away the sparkle from Kimberley - Amazing township life in Soweto.

in an hour distance you can visit some very nice sites like the cradle of humanity:)

Museums presented a very engaging and emotional depiction of the horrors of apartheid

Large, accessible shopping malls. Reasonable prices and large variety

Only that it is not as bad as the other major Cities

Thai restaurants, excellent night life
