There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
We loved our stay at this charming hotel in central Salta. The interiors are beautiful and very well kept. Our standard room was simple but had everything we needed. Breakfast is to order but of very high quality and prepared and served with love. The owner and staff were very friendly and accommodating, allowing us a late checkout as we had an afternoon flight out of Salta. If you’re looking for lovely and affordable place to stay in Salta look no further.
The hotel was in a temporary location during my stay, it was next door than the original hotel as I believe this was getting refurbishment. However this was fine and I really enjoyed my stay, the staff so was so welcoming to me, any issues I had were quickly resolved. They were extremely helpful with tourist tips and where to change my money as well. If I come back I will return to this Hotel.
The location of this place is definitely the highlight - right on the main square but still quiet. It's a family home but with a separate section just for guests (only 2 rooms), so it felt private. The room is small and comfortable enough, and the shared shower is hot. Overall, a good central option in Salta - we'd stay again 😊
Wonderful room. The breakfast is slow on the cafe but very well presented and probably one of the best in our stays in Argentina. The usual cost is quite a lot for this cafe so to have it included is great. The apartment is well finished and depending on your location you can get a view of the famous hills.
We absolutely loved Selina Salta! Such great vibes here. The rooms were small but they were clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful. They arranged massages for us too, when we asked. The food and drinks are delicious. So close to walk to the main plaza as well. We had a fabulous stay!
Hotel Colonial Salta is a charming small hotel located downtown, in Plaza 9 de Julio. You will live in an old building, with all the facilities, decorated with stylish furniture. The architecture is amazing, and the atmosphere is one of the best I have seen in my travels.
Such a lovely hostel! Dorm beds were big with a curtain around the bed, big lockers and aircon in the rooms. Free breakfast at the hotel next door was very nice. Would definitely recommend staying here, one of the nicer hostels I’ve been in Argentina so far
Very hospitable staff, who went above and beyond to make our stay lovely. I loved the breakfast being delivered to the room in the mornings. Room was overall comfortable, and cleaned very well each day. Great location being close to the center of Salta.
Excellent value. Bed & pillow were comfortable with A/C in the bedroom. The place was clean, basic and in a good location for walking to restaurants and the plaza. Helpful staff in reception area. Parking was underground and free (next to the hotel).
Very cute hotel 3 blocks from the city center. A nice patio with seating areas and a pool.
One would not expect sych a cosy and nice hitel at this location
Staff friedly and helpful, booked us various tables in the 'peñas'.
This is a lovely little hotel in the center of town with very comfortable beds and white clean sheets and towels. Nice helpful staff. We were happy to discover they had an elevator! We would definitely stay here again!
all functional facilities, including AC and hot shower. the owner was kind enough to prepare my breakfast at 6 am so that I could eat before the tour. Their homemade bread was the best bread I had in Argentina!
Great location and place for a short stay in Salta. The room we had faced the road, so it was a little noisy in the evening/morning. The check in process was super easy and the room was very clean.
In no exaggeration, this is the hotel with the highest cost-performance ratio in Salta. It comes with breakfast, has a kitchen, friendly owner, and attentive staff!
