I would highly recommend this hotel to travellers to Vienna. We found the staff not only to be attentive and thoughtful but very keen to advise on sightseeing, restaurants and to help in any way possible. The excellent breakfast and afternoon tea in the beautiful salon are complementing this extraordinary hotel in the heart of Vienna.

Altstadt is perfect for visiting the city, it's close to everything. Bedrooms and common areas are lovely. The staff could not do enough to make us feel at home.

The hotel staff were extremely polite, helpful and made our 3yr old son feel very welcome - most hotels don't really welcome children. The layout was different, it uses/retains an old world apartment layout, but this (we feel) added to its charm and its overall concept. Our suite was unique and well appointed and had lots of lovely 'little touches' which says alot - they put a little teddy bear on our sons bed which he was allowed to keep! If there was anything to recommend/improve we would say that it would be worth the owners considering proper lunch/evening meal provisions. They currently only offer 'light' evening snacks, which are very good by the way.

Awesome customer service and lovely, welcoming atmosphere for breakfast and afternoon tea. One feels very at home there. The bed was very comfortable and pillows just right. There was none of that pretenious air one sometimes feels at a hotel with more stars, and yet all very tastefully done. Great tea time music selection with homemade cake and high grade teas. Just grand. The elevator interior could use some love.

Everything one hopes for in a small, quality hotel. Personal service from really friendly staff who are knowledgeable about local restaurants and other facilities, as well as things to see and do. Junior suites large and very comfortable. Great afternoon tea, bar facilities and light food available till midnight Airport pick-up/drop off available. .Quirkily decorated, but excellent, public room facilities. Early start to building work on adjacent parts of the building - but resolved by the hotel staff. 7-8 minute walk to the nearest underground station.

I rarely say this about any hotel, but everything was great. The hotel as a whole was very well thought out in terms of design, it was originial, very clean, and very comfortable. The description extends to the rooms as well as to all the common areas. Staff was warm and very helptful. Special thanks goes to Matina, who was able to get us into our room by 9am (we had arrived earlier than expected). The location is spot on, it's away from the touristic centre of Vienna, but close if enough if you choose to walk there. The area around the hotel itself is charming and full of great restaurants and shops; and of course the Museum Quartier is next door.

Fantastic hotel - really friendly staff, lovely rooms with individual cosy feel - no beige blandness here! Delicious breakfast and afternoon tea a real treat after a day in the museums. Great location just a few minutes from the Museums Quarter and walking distance to the majority of the city's main attractions.

Boutique nature, uniqueness of the hotel and great customer service! Room was a little small for the rate we paid - be sure to check which room you are getting as it can vary wildly.

Clean rooms, free tea and cake in the afternoon, healthy breakfasts. The Alstadt is not a 4 star hotel. It is not a luxury hotel either. I cannot imagine why they have been awarded these badges. The supposed design feel that distinguishes the hotel in the guides/write ups is completely lacking. The pictures are of no great artistic merit and don't make any great contribution to the overall feel of the hotel. It is a well run boarding house. The hotel does not own/occupy all of the building it is in. So basically there are just a few rooms that they use and the stairs and other areas in the building are used by other businesses/ residents. It does not feel like a proper hotel at all. The stairs are not heated and feel very anonymous. When you arrive, you walk into an anonymous building. You then go up a steep flight of stairs and find the reception room behind a door in a small office with. Very high counter. It feels like a dentist reception. The staff are pleasant, but not overly courteous or helpful. We were staying with our 16 year old daughter. Because of the strange, semi occupation of the building, my husband and I were in one part of the building, behind two locked doors, and my daughter was in a different part of the hotel, again with a locked door to get access to her corridor and another lock to her room door. To make contact with each other, we had to phone or text, as we couldn't enter each others respective corridors to knock on the bedroom door. The rooms were furnished just about adequately. The sofa and chairs in our room definitely seemed to be second hand/granny's cast offs. The decor, furnishings and general design of the place was amateurish, unattractive and lacked any design flair. It felt like it all had all been done on the cheap. The bathrooms were adequate, but nothing special. The staff at breakfast varied from friendly to grumpy, depending on who was serving you. None seemed especially professional or properly trained.

Staff and service level were outstanding. Breakfast and tea time (included in price) were a real treat. Location was a bit too far outside the Ringestrasse for people with any kind of walking difficulties. However, with cabs being almost instantly available and relatively inexpensive, the relatively low cost of the hotel accommodation more than made up for any cabs we required. The hotel is in what appears to be a run-down office building on a non-descript street and reception is on the second floor. Once you get past the lack of lobby and get into the guest room area and the salon area, you are in for a delightful surprise.
