This stylish hotel is in the Linzergasse at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg hill, right in the center of Salzburg.
Score from 1616 reviews Excellent
A small, exclusive hotel with personal flair. It consists of 2 buildings, Altstadthotel and the Residenz, located across from each other in a quiet side street of the city’s pedestrian area.
Score from 849 reviews Very good

Great location and roof top bar / restaurant.
The location and the top floor bar/breakfast room & terrace and the friendly staff.
There are unmarked ridges/differing floor levels in the rooms we had, and a step in the dimly light corridor which could cause an accident if you are not looking out for these things. Also, there are no handles for getting in/out of the bath/shower - my mother found this difficult and wasn't able to have a bath as there was nothing to hold onto in her room.
They must have bought their 4 stars on the black market... This is gross false advertising. Dingy dark corridors, no room service. No amenities.. Do not go there ever
I loved the view from the restaurant. The service, food, and staff was absolutely 5 star. The chef was amazing. I ending up eating there most meals because the experience was so awesome. I would hit that hotel again.
My little single room was bizarre, slanted floor, long, narrow, and uneven from one end to the other. BUT, I only slept there and didn't care about that more than loving being in the city, eating up the atmosphere of the Christmas markets, and being loving helped by the amazing staff.
The location near the old historical district. The rooms were clean and had an old charm but not tired or worn looking. Great fabrics on the pillows and drapes. Loved the window seats looking out over the river and old town. Nice restaurant with great views on top floor.
The hallways are a bit dark.
Excellent view from room. Restaurant/bar on roof and close to everything
At the reception we found two very polite receptionist speaking and understanding english. The room was big and warn. Also the bed was big. The hotel has a car park with fee in about 5 minutes walking.
The restaurant/ bar on 7th floor and location
room was too small and bathroom too big
The great location, the great view of the castle (for a higher price), a large room with a renovated bathroom.
It is hard to believe that the owner can get away with the price it charges for this shabby, run-down place. The old hallways a dimly lit, perhaps, to mask old paint and worn out carpet. The squeaky hard wood floor in the room was perhaps put during Mozart time and has never been renovated. The room is furnished by old, shabby furniture and looked quite bare. There was absolutely nothing in the room beyond a bare minimum; no kettle, not even a cup. This is absolutely not a place one would expect for a price of over 250 Euro a night, but rather provides a cheap motel feel. We felt cheated to choose this hotel. It should be gut-renovated to do the justice to the prime location in the great city.
Roof Top Terrace ,fabulous and best view in town.
Hotel public areas , stairs, corridors in urgent need of update. Many public areas have insufficient lighting.
The location and the view from the breakfast terrace!
I paid extra for a room with a view. We were on the first floor which gave us a great view of the river but not of the fortress...this was very disappointing. Unlike other hotels booked through this company where the advertising pictures have matched the rooms, our room at the Hotel Stein was nothing like the rooms on the website.....this was very disappointing. The room was large but the floor was wood in bad repair and the room was cold.
location and view from the hotel
bed was the worse experience in my life. I travel 150K mile from 2013 to 2014 and stayed at many hotels but no one offer the mattress the literally hurt my body! My room number was 202
Exceptional location to discover the city on foot. Excellent views from room.
Chairs not positioned to take advantage of great view.
The hotel is located very closed to the old town and the view from the restaurant on the rooftop is excellent. The room was quite big and nice.
We had some troubles getting breakfast on 24th of december. We were told that breakfast would be served until 11 am. At 10.45 it was not possible anymore to get it even though everything was still there. The lady on duty was not very responsive. We did not get breakfast. Finally they paid us the amount of the breakfast back.
The bedrooms very modern staircases very dimly lit but but was gone for us. The panorama bar resturant a must as views were fantastic !!!
The public stairwell was very dark and prison like however it's a big area to renavate?
Two minor observations - I would have liked a wall mirror in the bedroom, and some shelving in the bathroom for toiletries would have been useful.
Everything was great...loved the creaky old floors and cool lifts...level 7 bar awesome
This is a great place to stay. Location is perfect, staff is very good. Lots of space in the room and bathroom. The food was good at breakfast, lots to choose from.
Breakfast was disorganized. They seem to be understaffed or in need of a main supervisor to keep things flowing better.
the terrace helpful knowledgeable staff the convenient central location for shops , the Altstadt, concert and theatre venues, the superb breakfasts
room was rather small and poorly lit hotel was selected , among other reasons, as it is a non smoking hotel , but we were not happy that the restaurant (open to the public ) seemed to allow smoking in the evening. we dined elsewhere
Location was fantastic! Right on the river, across from the Old Town, only a 5 minute walk to Mirabell Gardens and about 20 mins from the train station. Room was nice, furnishings and decor were very modern. Would highly recommend!
Breakfast wasnt included. The shower design (I.e.lack of a shower curtain) was a problem. The half glass door didn't keep the water contained and there was water all over the floor after a shower.
Reception staff friendly and helpful. They were happy to book restaurants, give advice about sightseeing etc. Great location - easy to walk everywhere and ... Incredible bar/restaurant on 7th floor with wonderful terrace with views of old town and fortress. The perfect spot for breakfast as well (which was delicious) fresh orange juice, good coffee and a good selection of food. Staff there also smiling and friendly. I took my mother and daughter (80 and 18) and could not have chosen better. Would definitely stay here again. If you just visit salzburg you don't need a car - and a taxi was only 16 euros to and from the airport.
I guess the restaurant is a little pricy - but you pay for the view and it is well worth while.
Excellent location, friendly staff, views from roof top bar excellent.
Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Great location with views over the city. Staff very helpful
Wifi patchy. Quality of suite could have been better, and was not as expected from the photo on the website. Very creaky floorboards. Shower head leaked and needed adjustment. Also put off by smokers in terrace/bar area next to lift exit.
Do not stay on the fifth, top, floor. Very low ceiling, 180cm. Very strong sewer smell.
