Staying at the New Northern was fine. We will probably stay there if the Jazz is on next year. The short walk down town is probably good for us.
character of the place
the room was a bit small
The smell of cooking each morning
A bit far to walk for evening meal.
Friendly staff, great food and comfortable well appointed room.
The vibe of the place. Great atmosphere, mood, live music - piano blues, flowers, candles, comfortable bed, great food, clean facilities and good staff.
Wi Fi didn't work in the morning, although check out was 11am.
Quiet, great building and rooms, artwork, furniture, dining room, huge bathroom. It felt like it fits with Castlemaine's character. The fact that it is near the 'historic industrial' area of town makes it even more unique.
Cleanliness, every where all was bright and clean. Staff great. Meals also good
Not enough cloths hanging facilities in room. Lack of drawing room
Room was clean and comfortable, great bed and bathroom ensuite.
No bar fridge in the room, didn't like the idea of a share fridge in the corridor. Thought that it was over priced for the location (quite a bit out of town, not really walking distance at night). Would have liked a cooked breakfast to be included given the price.
The staff were friendly and helpful. Shower heads were big, and water pressure strong. Bed was comfy. Big communal balcony good for smokers and chilling out. Breakfast of pastries baked on premises, toast, cereal, some fruit, and espresso coffee is included in the cost of the room which was a pleasant surprise as it isn't listed on booking.com.
Front room with a separate bathroom felt very small and poky. Traffic noise from the Midland Highway directly below wasn't much of a problem through the night but woke us up early. The bedside tables were tiny stools that didn't even have space to rest a book and a glass of water on. All in all, we slept comfortably for one night but I wouldn't recommend the New Northern for a longer stay.
The room we had was great... The bed was fantastic, the room was heated prior to our arrival. And it was greatly appreciated as it was cold in Castlemaine. Breakfast was yummy. Very happy.
The room cups are too small.. Mugs better. And there were no saucers with cups. The breakfast had no juice freely available, and self serve plunger or other coffee would be better.
decor atmos woodgrain quiet location lovely asthetic
I didnt know breakfast was part of the overnite payment. No info re this in room re times breakfast is available.Great breakfast pastries ! when i found it.
Friendly staff. A warm, comfortable bed.
Maintenance of fixtures and fittings in separate bathroom needed. Poor value given the room had separate bathroom accessed across hallway.
We arrived as dinner was in full swing, the jazz band playing, a warm greeting and up to our room. Back down stairs for dinner and a great nights rest, the best bed and a great room.
Left our fabulous room to use the bathroom facilities and accidentally locked the door behind us. It was late and we were worried we'd have to sleep the night on the sofa, but alas along came a knight who's phone we used and help arrived minutes later. A great stay.
The general atmosphere of the restored hotel. Waking to the smell of wonderful fresh croissants cooking for breakfast!
Friendliness of staff and willingness to help. Quality restoration throughout. Couldn't possibly resist the pastries for breakfast.
The warmth and good feeling of the lounge with jazz and good wine. Lovely comfy bed, beautiful dinner and lovely fresh pastries for breakfast. We enjoyed our stay and will certainly recommend the New Northern to our friends.
Ambience - decorations & furnishings are special. Bathroom was excellent. Breakfast was very good - the pastries are justly famous. 11 am checkout was appreciated.
Guest entry is inconvenient and a bit complicated. Needs signposting and explanation. Room facilities were a little meagre.
Refurbished room and bathroom. Open fire downstairs. Home made gnocchi and slow cooked lamb ragu.
Cold room on arrival despite advising approximate arrival time (5 degrees outside and pouring rain). Expecting live Jazz particularly on a Saturday night - did not happen. Booked for special Sunday Roast event for Wine/Food Festival and advised on arrival this was cancelled.
the bathroom was a little dirty. Hair on the floor and urine stains under the toilet set
the ambience, music and food
yoghurt for breakfast would be good
Live music a big bonus
Fresh baked goods for breakfast.
Food and drinks were a bit expensive.
Decor, value for money, bar
No door handle on room No wardrobe to hang clothes No cabinet in bathroom Breakfast service slow and quality poor eg coffee took 10 minutes, croissants cold, milk not available
Great bathroom, bed very comfortable, breakfast excellent. Also good performance venue.
No wardrobe or hanging space for clothes, only hangers on back of door. I had costumes, nowhere to put them. Also a half a bottle of brandy vanished from our room ...!
