This place is perfect for people who want independence. I prefer to make my own custom vacation. If you don't want a resort doing everything for you (and overcharging for alcohol, food, often non-existent service, etc), then you'll love Gobajac. The place is luxurious, and the photos don't do it justice. The description in Booking.com is only partial (!!!), and I'll try to fill in the gaps. For example, consider this: they provide you with an iPad to use during your stay. How 'bout that. STAFF. - Anderson runs the place, and he's terrific at his job; he genuinely wants you to have the best possible experience, and will go out of his way to accomodate you (especially with issues you may not be aware of). - Karen greeted us when we arrived, and she's a prime example of the ideal go-to person for hands-on assistance. She was always available to help us with a number of things (like locking a bedroom door from the outside by accident :). - I don't know who the maid was (didn't meet her), but she was impressively thorough. BUILDING - covered garage (car doesn't heat in the sun) - gorgeous balcony (or ground) views of the south coast, as it's on a BIG hill (we stayed in the upper unit) - insanely high ceilings. - awesome ventilation from the winds (you can open all windows, and both sets of balcony french doors) UNIT - excellent A/C - gorgeous furniture (sturdy;) - brand-new kitchen appliances (clean!!!) - Fridge has built-in ice maker - basic but classy dishes, etc. - elegance all around - completely renotaved. I could find no faults. - electronics include wired speakers (all with bluetooth compatibility) in all rooms, Google Box, cable TV, and HDMI-compatible widescreen. Also an iPad in one bedroom, a smaller widescreen in another. Oh, also local phone in one room, and another (extra-cost long-distance service) in another room. - one bedroom goes to the balcony - third bedroom (largest) has private bathroom with a bath.
Note: not wheelchair/stroller friendly (wide stairs on the outside leading up to both units). We weren't affected, but this may be critical to some people. Note 2: not really a negative, but you must have a car (or use a taxi all the time, but that's expensive). Barbados is best seen if you drive around all the time, and I wouldn't go there without a rental. WiFi was slow to upload (download is completely fine). If you're reading this later than May 2014, chances are Anderson has had this taken care of already. I have no bad memories (and that's saying a lot, coming from such a critic!!!).
This is a really well appointed and large two-bedroomed apartment (there is a three bedroomed one on the floor above). It is very comfortable and comes with laundry facilities, wi-fi, off street parking, barbecue, wireless printer, Ipads, huge TV with cable, satellite and internet access (with subscriptions to Netflix etc for films), electric guitar and amplifier, kitchen with plenty of pots, pans, coffee makers (2), ice-making fridge etc. There is plenty of room for four people without getting into each others way. There are two bathrooms with lots of fluffy white towels and blue beach towels. Virtually everything we could have wanted (picnic set, cool box etc) was included. When we arrived there was milk, butter, tea, coffee, ketchup, water and fruit etc already there and we should have got a home cooked evening meal but this didn't work out although the property manager offered to nip out to a takeaway and get us a meal - we were assured that this would be sorted out for subsequent visitors. Michelle, the property manager, was charming and very helpful as was our twice a week bed changing cleaner who left everything sparkling. We had a minor hiccup when our credit card refused to work when trying to pay the balance of the fee but this was sorted out easily and very amicably over the phone. Really, everyone was very nice and laid back and very trusting. This would really be our first choice to stay the next time we go to Barbados - much cheaper than a hotel and with far more room and facilities - although it doesn't have a pool but the beach is only 10 mins away by car. We appreciated the fact that we weren't in a tourist area but could get there easily if we wanted.
These are really minor points and are sure to be fixed very soon. The documentation for all the appliances left a lot to be desired, we had problems working out how to get the microwave, air conditioning, cooker, safe, TV etc to work properly (but we'd have problems with this anyway as we are not particularly good with technical stuff!). The Ipads wouldn't talk to the printer but we got our netbook to print out. The double beds are huge and immensely comfortable but have one edge against the wall so you have to climb over your companion to get out if you are on the wall side. The apartment is a bit out of the way in a residential rather than tourist district and difficult to find, especially in the dark but once you get used to that it is fine as it is close to the airport and Oistins is easy to get to. We would suggest that you really need a car, as we had, as it is a bit of a walk to the nearest bus stop. The whole place has been newly refurbished and there were some things that weren't quite finished like the shower in the guest bathroom that leaked so we didn't use it, but probably will be all fixed very soon.
