It felt like a friendly atmosphere and because it was an actual working brewery there was definitely character to it. The beer was good and the food looked good although we didn't actually eat there ourselves. The location was good (less than 10 minutes walk to the centre), it has its own car parking and an easy access to the main motorway. The breakfast was good too. The staff were friendly and helpful. We also liked the back courtyard and the residence lounge. Bathroom could have been a little updated, although it was clean.

Excellent buffet style breakfast - good variety of breads, meats cheeses, fruits, cereals and juices. Lovely comfortable room. Very clean. Well situated for going into Mechelen centre or for going out of town - right on the main ring road. Very comfortable bed. Very modern shower. Good range of tv channels. Brewery setting and mini museum of brewing artefacts added a touch of charcter especially for those interested in beer or brewing. Some people may find the exterior of the annexe (where some rooms are) a little uninviting initiallyi, but once inside your room, it is comfortable and welcoming. Our room had no drawer space and no plug in the washbasin. External staircase for first floor rooms access, almost a bit like a fire escape: not a problem for us, but not to everyone's taste, and visitors with mobility issues should be sure to request ground floor on booking.

It is just around the corner from the Begijnhof and a 5 minute walk to the cathedral. It has free parking and wi fi and a good restaurant which naturally offers the beers produced on site

A good experience to stay in a working brewery. The accommodation was clean and entirely acceptable. The beer is pretty good too! A comment about the restaurant: My pal was bitterly disappointed in the chicken dish, a speciality of the region that, according to him, used to be much better on the occasions he had ordered it previously. Not an inexpensive dish, it arrived as a chicken breast accompanied by a watery gravy and, horror of horrors, potato croquettes of a distinctly supermarket grade.

Location is excellent. Rooms are large and clean. Breakfast is good and the restaurant and brewery tour are excellent. Internet access in some of the rooms is quite poor. It required us to sit in the lobby in order to get a good enough signal to conduct our business in the evenings. The hotel advertises that parking is available. This is a bit misleading, as they don't actually have enough parking in the hotel lot for all rooms. If you arrive early in the evening/late afternoon, you can get parking, but otherwise you have to look for something on the street or across the street at a store. However, this requires you to feed parking meters or move your car by 9am.

Carolus has very good beer and the dinner was good. The room was reasonably good with a comfortable bed. It also free WIFI. The staff were very courteous. The breakfast was a basic selection. Not like some other Belgian hotels that had some hot food apart from boil your own egg. On one occasion we had to set our own breakfast table in the absence of staff. They did not replenish the eggs so we could not have a boiled one like other guests. We noticed that some of the locals were getting their beer glasses filled up more than ours, which did even meet the line on the glass.

Staying at the Hotel Carolus was absolutely one of the highlights of our trip to Belgium. The hotel is housed in the Brewery Het Anker. They were the only people in Belgium who made arrangements for my wife and I to visit the actual brewery with a tour in English. No one else we contacted in the whole country would accomodate 2 people. The hotel, restaurant, and especially the staff far exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend a stop here if you are any where in the vicinity. I sadly admit that I had never heard of Mechelen, but the ancient city is roughly equidistant from both Antwerp and Brussels and is well worth a visit. Go there and stay at the Hotel Carolus!!

A very comfortable hotel with parking making a great stop-over through Belgium with the possibility of exploring Brussels and the environs. The fact that it is also part of a brewery with a fantastic range of very interesting beers to sample adds interest and the brasserie attached is a good place to eat with bags of atmosphere and a local non-resident clientele. Very busy even on a Sunday night when we stayed.

Great result after the renovation with nice integration into the brewery, shop and brasserie. Spacious rooms. I was very irritated when a truck delivered to the brewery at 9pm and made an incredible noise for up to one hour. Wifi was not working.

Very nice pub/restaurant adjacent to the hotel. The pub serves the special beers of the brewery the hotel belongs to and the food served is very tasty. Inconvenient is the way to check in and out of the hotel. To open the gate to the hotel's parking one should provide an intercom service.

The relaxed approach during breakfast, everything available on view and just help yourself. Off road car parking. Enjoyed tasting the different Beers on offer each night. A different way of dealing with people when bar was open to the general public. Didn't understand the evening menu and the ingredients of the meals so felt there wasn't anything that took our fancy.

The design of the hotel is great - an area of the working brewery has been converted into extremely spacious bedrooms with excellent facilities, including tea/coffee making facilities in room. The bar/restaurant serves excellent food at very reasonable prices and the beers on tap and in bottles are all supplied by the brewery. Very nice and helpful staff. On site parking facilities. The town of Mechelen is very quiet at night, so wouldn't recommend to groups of friends looking for a big night out, but the hotel/brewery/restaurant and bar make for a great place to stop whilst travelling through Belgium.

Staff were very friendly, helpful and informative. Room was well equipped and spotless. Ideal to use as a base for a short break which we did. Language was not a problem as the staff are multi-lingual, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
