If you want to travel around Belgium, I highly recommend Dendermonde, because it's in the middle and train connections to big cities are excellent (and almost all are direct). City is smaller, very nice and there is a secret gnome village in the big park next to the station. :))

Dendermonde is a perfect starting point for visiting Ghent...
Dendermonde is a perfect starting point for visiting Ghent and Antwerp, even Brussel or Brugge. In the city there is not much to do, it's nice and quiet so perfect to recharge you battery, far from the big cities crowds and noises.

Just 30mins by car from Ghent -- much more than you get for the same price in the city. Dendermonde is also a cute town to explore.
