It all started early 2002, when 2 couples of antiques-dealers with hotelier roots and passionate about old houses, decided to restore the wonderful Chateau De Spycker to its former glory. They turned it into a home, a private showroom for antiques and exclusive designer fabrics and a place where one can welcome guests who appreciate the beautiful things in life.
Dating from the 12th C, “Chateau de Spycker”, is set in the green countryside between Bruges & Damme, yet only a 5 minutes’drive from Bruges’ city center. When arriving onto the grounds, one is immediataly charmed by the beautiful garden, the lake and the old trees. The castle itself was rebuilt in 1873 and has been painstakingly restored, revealing its beautiful architectural elements such as mouldings, floors, doors etc. The amazing hall, the lounge, library and dining-room express the 18th C. chateau-atmosphere where guests can experience being cherished in a historic though luxurious surrounding. The interior is authentic though not stuffy or old-fashioned. The original kitchen in “Delft tiles” and house-chapel are certainly worth a visit.
. Every morning a delicious breakfast is prepared. If requested beforehand, a table d’hôte (1 menu) can be organised on Friday and Saturday evening, serving traditional food based on local and seasonal recipies.
De Spycker provides 3 graciously proportioned guestrooms decorated with French block-print fabrics based on 18th C patterns, original antiques and marble bathrooms with all modern comfort and amenities, which a discerning traveller would require. Every morning a delicious breakfast is prepared
Brugge is incontrovertibly one of the most attractive cities in Europe. The canals and alleyways, the churches, almshouses and patricians' houses, the decoratively restored gables and the museums full of art treasures bring the past palpably to life. Furthermore, Brugge is a living, modern and romantic city which has something to offer the most demanding visitor. As a walker, you will derive twice the enjoyment of the open-air museum that is Brugge in all its historic splendour. If you are deterred by the thought of a long walk, you can always be driven around by one of the famous coachmen, or take a unique boat journey on the "Reien", as the canals of the city of Brugge are known.
Damme was once the outport of Brugge, and world famous as the birthplace of Tijl Uilenspiegel. The Brugse Ommeland stretches out behind the entire coastline until Bruges. This piece of green Flanders is an unequalled cyclists' paradise. A number of picturesque routes have been charted and signposted for cycling enthusiasts. While pedalling your two-wheeler you'll pass through many other peaceful polder villages such as Oostkerke, Hoeke, Lapscheure and Lissewege, where you can go and admire the largest barn in country. If you like expressionist art you should really spend a couple of hours visiting the Provinciaal Museum Constant Permeke in Jabbeke. The Permeke-route is a forty-five-kilometre long cycling route which takes you through Gistel, Jabbeke and Oudenburg, the three municipalities on the border of the fertile polders and the arid sandy region
