Complementary bar in the rooms; good TV channels; good internet access
Thin walls where you cold hear everything in the next room.
Spacious and comfortable room with wonderful big bathroom and nice views across the city
Brilliant location Large and beautiful rooms A very grand cafe with excellent food
Bathrooms need updating - small and old fittings Expensive breakfast, especially given that the hotel is surrounded by lovely cafés
The hotel is very well placed for the centre of Brussels. The décor of the communal areas is wonderfully historic. There are plenty of staff at check-in/out which is useful for business people who need to get to meetings at specific times - I have queued at some other hotels for 20 minutes to check out.
I found the bed in the room (350)uncomfortable - a very lumpy mattress made it difficult to sleep - and the bath (around the taps) had as much evidence of repaired enamel as original. The main lift, though elegant, has been unreliable for years now and there is no other lift to many rooms without using stairs in addition. This unreliability would make the hotel unsuitable for those unable to carry suitcases up/down stairs. The hotel has promised refurbishment of the lift for a while now. That work, and refurbishment of the rooms, feels well overdue.
Friendly staff and a beautiful hotel
Poor WiFi Our room was a little shabby with water stained wall paper and broken shower attachment
The lobby and the rest of the ground floor rooms were impressive. Our room was nice too, but ...
There was a red smudge on the bathroom door (blood? ketchup?) and a used plaster next to the bathroom bin. The bathroom looked nice but the shower could do with a few improvements (the shower head did not fit into the holder and there was a big gap under the glass which meant that the water went pretty much everywhere. We 'only' paid a little over 100 euros for the room, but I'd still expected more from this hotel.
Location great for sightseeing and shops. Staff very helpful.
Price of breakfast and drinks in bar.
Dirty out dated rooms, marks on walls, view of the back of an old run down building - AVOID!
We were upgraded to huge, very sumptuous suites which meant we couldn't believe the value for money we got.
Historic feel, the location. Helpful staff, particularly Roland in valet and Didier (?) in the front office.
We booked a standard room and had to see 4 different rooms before we finally settled in. Every room we looked at had a terrible odor to it, including the one we ended up staying in. They were kind enough to upgrade us, but it was a huge upgrade, and I don't see how they can afford to do that. Our suite had some type of electrical short circuit in the bathroom that caused sparks to blow out from the light switch. We showered in the dark until they fixed the problem. The wood railings on the balconies are badly weathered and rickety, the walls have scuff marks all over them, the paint is chipped in many places, and laminate flooring has been placed over what used to be carpeted areas, looking very cheap. The carpet in our room had uneven surfaces underneath it that made you wonder what you were walking on. I won't even go into the debacles we experienced in the Café. This hotel is a faded jewel in need of a major renovation, and I do mean major. I cannot understand how they are able to maintain a 5 star rating, because it doesn't even come close. I hope that one day it will be restored to its former glory.
We normally go a bit cheap and cheerful, but this hotel had an offer on so got it at a bargain price compared to the usual. The setting of the hotel is amazing, the entrance etc is very impressive. We had a superior double bedroom and the beds were so comfortable and huge and it was very quiet. It is also in a great location in Brussels, we walked everywhere, but if you have any issues with walking, it is right next to a metro. There is also a member of staff there to help you out with any questions in Brussels which is a nice touch! (Although we asked them for a good waffle house and the two they offered us were actually shut down a long time ago...Opps!)
The place was really grand and impressive, but actually, within the room, the carpets and furniture was just old and worn out. We didn't mind as we got it at a good price but I would not have been happy if paying full price. The paint was coming off the skirting boards, dressing tables were very tired looking and the carpet was basically two colours with where people had been walking on. It just needed a bit of a refresh. However, this is very minor!
Lift not always working
Professional, friendly and very helpful staff (especially on the Concierge desk). A good sized bedroom with good bathroom facilities and a large comfortable bed. I had a bedroom with a good view at the front of the hotel.

Fantastic location Breakfast Free champagne breakfast New Year's Day Free mini bar - coke - beer - water Staff
Room a bit dated and not 100% clean Buzzing noise in aircon or heating in room which kept us awake Due to noise in heating did not keep it on therefore cold
Architecture and hospitality
Central location. Decent TV.
Lacks warmth. On noisy street. Overall average.
Location and its history
The hotel needs big renovations as the floors is not flat and in poor condition, as well as the furnitures are too old and poor quality
Location, spaciousness of room
No help offered with luggage; no directions to (working) elevator (the one near reception was out of order); no directions to the room (which was not on the 5th floor as expected by the room number, but on the 6th). Impossible to have a drink in the hotel: bar closed on Sunday and Monday, brasserie only open for dinner, only place for as drink: the terrace outside in freezing weather. Heating in the room did not work properly; freezing at night, very noisy airco during the day. All in all: not a hotel to be recommended.
Good location, old world historic feel.
Although renovations underway, still a bit contrived (ie, bathroom was raised for modern plumbing installation) and not perfect (cracked tiles in bathroom, handprints in closet)
The hotel looks tired. In a dire need for renovation. Actual condition of the hotel doesn't resemble photos as presented on Internet.
The reception artdeco decor Central location
room with no view-a brick wall
Great location with the subway just a minute walk away from the hotel. Very friendly reception and good breakfast. Also good housekeeping service.
The bathroom was a little dirty and there was noise every morning because of the AC's outer unit.
Situation and ambiance of hotel and the cafe metropole.
Poor carpet in room, in need of a bit of an upgrade.
