Paraty is surrounded by emerald green forests attached to mountains that plummet directly into turquoise waters or white-sand beaches. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses of the city centre pay homage to its Portuguese roots, and accessible islands and secluded beaches lure the sun-seeking crowds.
White buildings decorated with colourful door arches and window surrounds line the small lanes of the historic old town. The 17th-century First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies watches over the shaded eastern meeting point of Matriz Square.
North of the canal are Pontal and Jabaquara beaches that are split by the Perpetual Defender fortress, built by the British in the 18th century. Hiring a boat will take you out to more remote islands like diving hot spot Ilha dos Meros or unspoilt Paraty-Mirim Beach, south of the city.
As part of Brazil’s Costa Verde coast, the nearby Gold Trail and Serra da Bocaina National Park highlight the native Atlantic forest and fauna such as the sloth.
Whether you are seeking a peaceful nature retreat, beachside guest house or city centre hostel, Booking.com has an option for you.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian. A beautiful town with a historic center. The city has various nice restaurants (but usually quite pricy) and shops.
Since it’s not in the mountains, it’s easier to visit than for example ouro preto.

I think 1 or 2 nights is just right.
I think 1 or 2 nights is just right. It is nice to do a layover in Paraty because on the bus ride to and from (Rio/Sao Paulo) you can see quite a bit of the smaller towns and nature. If you did a bus direct from SP to Rio it would stick to the main highways and you wouldn't see as much. Worth a visit if you have time but keep in mind everything will be slightly more expensive as local tourists also like coming here. There are also lots of festivals so depending if you like festivals you could time your trip to coincide with one of them. During my stay there was a gastronomy festival which was pretty cool. They had cooking demonstrations and free samples of stuff.

Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam.
Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam. It is just 4 streets of colonial buildings with arrogant people. It is marketed extremely well as you believe that Paraty is a village of only colonial buildings however to our surprise they have added (obviously quite some time ago) more buildings and a bigger village the new town shall we call it. It is full of homeless people and danger the floor is disgusting and the people are intimidating. The supermarket is poorly built shed with insects everywhere and extremely overpriced. we left a day earlier than planned as we could not wait to escape the hell hole.

Paraty has a very smalll historical area. Unless you want to take a boat trip you can view the area in a couple of hours. The beaches in Paraty itself are not very nice for swimming but outside there are beautiful beaches and areas.

I love Paraty, and I always come back there.
I love Paraty, and I always come back there. The city is quaint, charm, small. The Historic Centre, old from the discover of Brasil, with stone streets. This year i went to the Bourbon Jazz Festival, and it was amazing. In Paraty there are delicious restaurants, ice cream shop (O Finlandês and Pistache best ones in my opinion). And i would like to have more time to go around with boat (I just did 1 tour with the boat)and I went to a trekking (pão de açúcar)- Ride to in Parati Mirim and from there 20 min by boat. Amazing
Very cosy and charming Pousada, with a lovely courtyard garden (with hammocks). Staff is very friendly and helpful, giving you tips for all sorts of activities that you can book in Paraty and surroundings. They also cooked a very elaborate breakfast fresh for us every morning. The pousada and room were clean, and the bed was comfortable. The location was also very good: just outside but still very close (2 min walk) to main bit of the historic centre. Did I mention the monkeys that come down for banana every morning?
Marcelo, Sol and Bianca are the kindest and most warm-hearted people. They had detailed tips for Paraty and around, and took care of anything we needed including a great breakfast and washing our clothes. The rooms are very clean and, if required, they can be cleaned every day. When you look out of your room's window over the roofs of Paraty you really want to become a poet. Staying at the Pousada was a big reason for our wonderful time in Paraty. Thank you so much!
A family business run by a very nice lady! Although they don't speak much English they tried to accommodate and explain everything and gave me lots of tips. Very nice and friendly atmosphere and cozy Brazilian vibe <3
The location is also really good and very close to the old town.
Felt really safe as a solo female traveler and was convenient to be able to return home walking after midnight since Uber is not much available in Paraty
Really clean!
Room was very clean and comfy, people were very friendly, Rinata at the reception was very helpful, kind and informative, she made everything very pleasant.
Breakfast was good, not much varieties but was good, and the cooks were very sweet.
Location is great, walking distance from the historical city, yet not noisy, and was good to have designated parking area for the hotel
We had a deluxe room which was very clean, well finished and comfortable beds. The bathroom was nice and shower very good. The pool has nice views, one of the best in Paraty. The breakfast was delicious and very good quality, big variety. The walk from historic centre is not long either. One of the best pousadas in Paraty in that price range.
We loved the front desk staff and how helpful they were with booking tours in the area. We did a boating tour one evening with David and a tour to Trinidad and that was awesome. Walkability from this hotel to restaurants and
Shops in Historic Paraty is also great! Bed was comfortable and hotel was cute, we loved the pool table and pool.
A very clean apartment. The hotel itself is intimate and quiet, located a bit outside the center, but a nice walk to the center takes 10 minutes. The hostess, Beata was very helpful both in organizing local trips and in organizational matters (laundry, etc.) When I am back in Paraty I will use this hotel.
The pousada is generally in a good location on the edge of the historic district. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a tub and a shower, which was nice. The breakfast was more than adequate for the traditional Brazilian offering. The staff were friendly and courteous.
We stayed for 2 nights with our kids while exploring Paraty and beaches around. Very comfortable and modern apartments with close proximity to Paraty (by car) or beaches. Hotel has a nice pool and all is kept very clean and tidy... We will definitely stay again and would recommend this place to others....
Amazing breakfast, super kind staff, best location possible, beautiful Pousada, spacious and nice room. Everything was perfect, I have no complaints. Pousada 10/10.
About the excursions they advertise, I really recommend taking the boat trip “Escuna Paz e Amor”, it is paradise and well priced.
Everything was great. Location is close to the city center, walking distance, staff was so kind, accommodation was clean and comfortable.
I totally recommend Che Lagarto for solo travellers and people who like getting to meet new people, both from Brazil and from abroad.
The Property was clean, well located and easy access. The owner was very helpful all days and gave us always helpful information regarding nice things to do in and around Paraty. Breakfast was great and with quality each day
There was nothing not to like about the hotel…. beautiful landscapes , breakfast on the outdoor patio with ocean just feet away, very peaceful and quite setting. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.
It was a perfect stay at Pousada Bartholomeu. Simple and comfortable, with a very attentive staff and an excellent location. Nothing to complain about, and would stay there again for sure.
