The room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was a typical Brazilian pousada breakfast so enough to start the day. Majority of staff were friendly and helpful. Great 'free' wifi throughout the pousada.
The location is not great at the weekend when the centro historico is deserted. I live in Brasil but for the first time in 5 years I didn't feel safe, even during the day.
Hostel is beautifullly restored and impeccably kept by staff. Breakfast is excellent. Wifi ok but could be stronger. This is great for families and couples.
Staff could be more helpful in knowing where to do thing like laundry since the hostel no longer offers that service and what´s going on around town including city tours. San Luis famous for its Reggae but staff didn´t know where to go or what nights were popular even though famous clubs just blocks away. Samba party a few doors down and staff also unaware. Not a great hostel for solo traveller as not much to do in hostel and other guests are primarily couples or families.
This pousada is in a DANGEROUS area! We were victims of crime in the area... There is no reserved parking so we parked our car on a street around the corner and it was broken into (the thief leaving his knife at the scene - no joke!). We were also informed by the guy at reception that a couple were robbed RIGHT OUTSIDE the door of this place by an armed attacker the night before, the person on reception helpless to do anything! I do not want say anything negative about a business but I feel I need to warn other potential guests lest something bad happened to them! To the management, you have a beautiful building and friendly staff, but you need to arrange some sort of parking for guests. Also, you MUST hire a guard that sits outside who can usher arriving guests in at night. Plenty of other businesses do this, you need to so the same to protect your guests.
- location - breakfest - staff - rooms are amazing - common areas are great
I liked the decoration, turn a simple place in an fancy one, with nice harmonization between lights, old building an amazon environment. I enjoy a lot.
I didn't like the location at night, very dangerous neighborhood. Cant walk around at night. During day light its ok.
-Situation of the pousada is very good at the centre of the historical town. -Breakfast, Wifi and downstairs are OK, but not to be overrated.
-Double Deluxe room: should have nice view upon the old town, all we saw was an old wear down building from our window, no views whatsoever! -TV doesn't work, no channels work !! -Walls in bedroom and bathroom are very dirty, paint comes off the walls, in the bathroom there a lot of mold !! (very unhealty).
The building is huge and still being renovated. The standard rooms are quite dark, but high ceilings compensate it and overall the atmosphere of this place brings a lot of the colonial flavor.
Wifi doesn't work. Available only at reception.
Nice old house. Perfect location.
bad shower, towels routes and pierced delay to replenish the breakfast, room floor creaks, no air conditioning cools in the room, cockroach in room, access to wi-fi doesn't work
Old and dirty linen with mold and stain! The room we stay with big gap, and cannot be locked only with the chain!
The location is great - very central and easily found by cab drivers. The common areas of the pousada are also beautiful
I have noticed that this is common in some of the old colonial house conversions - not all rooms are of the same quality, and the rooms themselves were quiet basic, with very few amenities. I stayed there two nights, in two separate rooms - and the rooms looked and felt completely different (the same quality, just there was no continuity, or it didn't feel like the same hotel) Also, one of the rooms I stayed in was overlooking the courtyard, and there was a lot of noise coming from the breakfast preparations, around 6 am.
The location is perfect if you are staying one night in São Luis before heading to Lençois, it gives you a good night sleep and you are in the heart of the old historical centre, where you can walk around the streets and check the "azulejos" and enjoy some night life. The hotel is inside a very old house and it gives it a lot of character. The hotel has a restaurant as part of it (a pizzaria) and their pizzas are quite good.
As the pousada is inside a very old house, there is no lift, so if you are staying in one of the room at the second floor there are quite a lot of stairs to climb and can be tiring for the elderly (it certainly was for me!). Staff at the reception are nice but we had problems with the breakfast staff that (even though the breakfast is supposed to end at 10am) started to taking things out of the table before 10am. The staff also did not want to do a tapioca (special local dish part of the local menu) when asked at 9:45, saying that orders ended at 9:30. Staff at the kitchen had an attitude that did not made you feel comfortable having breakfast there.
This posada is in a stunning old mansion in the historical part of the town. It's simply done and is just beautiful. A word of warning - don't listen to the taxi drivers, they tell you that the old town is full of drug addicts and criminals. It's not. Like any other city you must be careful but it beautiful and we found perfectly safe.
Style, breakfast, and services in general
A nice little hotel, very well located for visiting Sao Luis. The three-person room is tiny and is completely filled by the three breeds without any extra space for moving around or leaving luggage
The breakfast is very minimal but acceptable. The amount of mosquitoes in the room, the non-working a/c and the lack of sound isolation makes sleeping difficult.
great relaxing area In the city center (might not be the most exciting area of the city) Colonial building
Cold water in the shower water dropping from the cealing all day/night even after informing the reception We asked for an early breakfast (6:30) but was not possible
Wonderful athmosphere in a great city. perfect breakfast, wifi in the lounge (not in the rooms), lovely rooms located around a central court, very quiet, just lovely. We liked Sao Luis a lot, because it is beautiful and not yet touristical...
Position. Staff will help you organizing everything and solving all the problem(including language problems..nobody speaks english!). Rooms are clean. Pousada is a beautiful building. Well furnished.
Ask for in-facing rooms
The nice conglomerate of antique buildings beholds some surprises inside and serves as an ideal starting point to discover the city. The normal rooms do not have very much privacy since all windows go to the inside corridor. We complained about that and got an upgrade (thanks again for that).
I got an electrical shock on opening the shower. The place misses some care and was in kind of a continuing breakdown. The pousada is not a bit flexible on changing reservations - we wanted to cut our stay short and we had to pay the full amount of days. A very strange procedure happened on checking-in: getting my credit card data from booking.com, they charged me the whole rate for our stay some days before our arrival and wanted to pick up my signature afterwards. However, I authorized booking.com to do so, not the hotel and picking up my signature afterwards shows that very clearly. On discussing that with the hotel manager he explained me that "that happens in all hotels all over the world" - nope.
The historic building is very charming. It's close to a number of decent restaurants.
The area is full of shady-looking characters. Rooms on the lower floors can be noisy because of creaky floors above.
The staff was very helpful and the hotel was conveniently located in the historic district. The decor was cool. The breakfast and the food in the attached pizzeria was good.
My room wasn't what I expected it to be...the shower wasn't as clean as it could be and I had no hot water. The TV barely had a signal.
the whole hotel team is very, friendly, forthcoming and helpful.
The place would need to be renovated - at least painted new.
Staff are very friendly.
Right in the centre of the old town where the annual carnival takes place, this value for money place offers comfort and character in equal measure. While not all staff speak English, Google gets you by and they do their best to make your stay a memorable one (thanks Patrizia and Rony especially!) from changing your room to organising trips. If you can negotiate little quirks like the medieval room keys then you'll love it. The owner also has a great pizzeria attached to the Pousada so you don't have to go far for a good meal if you're tired from a day of sightseeing and dancing. Will go again. Voce sempre meu amigos!
Arriving for the Bumba Meu Boi festival I discovered that I literally couldn't get any closer to the action if I tried - all I had to do was open one of the 3 enormous sash windows in my room and look down on the whirling matrons below ! The hotel is a maze of corridors and stairs leading to (if my room is anything to go by) large airy rooms, decorated in a quirky individual colonial style, leaving you feeling like you've just walked into a novel by Gabriel Marcia Marquez.
Its definitely shabby chic, more fading glory than in its first flush of grandeur- but the ambience of the place convinces you to turn a blind eye to some of its faults.
