Hotel Villa Santo Antonio  

The location is just a short walk to the historic centre and most of the bigger sights in Salvador. The hotel itself is a very nice refurbished older home and once the rest of the buildings in the area are renovated, this will be a prime location. The restaurant and some of the rooms overlook the water from a high vantage point. The staff could be helpful (2 spoke English and 1 spoke French) and even secured Carnival tickets for us, but they do need more info for tourists.

This is one of those hotels that needs to review their booking.com listing. As an example, the listing says the standard rooms come with a/c which they don't (a big miss on hot days in Salvador), but it also suggests that there are shared bathrooms (all the rooms we saw had ensuites). Despite the listing we were asked to pay 50% in advance. This was understandable since we were there during Carnival but when checking out they could find no record of payment and went as far as to suggest that we hadn't made one (we were able to provide proof). They charge a very high 8% for cc use which also doesn't match the listing. Paying our bill took close to an hour (but they did give us a free drink). Salvador has a crime problem and the area immediately around the hotel is particularly bad apparently- that said, we had no issues but you do need to be careful.
