This is a hotel for the adventurous, not the pampered. We took a third floor room with a shared bath. It is very like hotels in Italy and Spain, small, comfortable but not fancy rooms, shared showers and toilets, and a lot of stairs to climb. The whole hotel, including shared spaces, is very clean and fresh. Our room overlooked the corner of two busy streets, the one in front of the hotel had only recently reopened after being closed for most of the summer for festivals. A lot of folks thought festivals were still in full swing, so it wasn’t quiet, but we are used to that, and slept fine. If you are a light sleeper, get a back room instead. The location is great, you can walk most anywhere, old Montreal, the Mont Royale Park, museums, shopping, etc. The restaurant strip is just a few blocks away, with many wonderful places to eat. We had different cuisines every night, all of them good. The staff was great, had a lot of good suggestions about food, entertainment, what to see, etc. And don’t worry that the only language is French, everybody speaks great English, better than me. Must be great to speak two languages so well. I recommend the Abri highly, and will stay there when I go back to Montreal.
Be advised, it is not easy to get to this hotel, even after you locate it on a map. This is center city Montreal, there are a lot of one way streets and traffic is horrific most of the day. We finally parked the car and walked to get there. There is no on-site parking, but there is a municipal parking garage a block or so away that you can park in for $20 per day.
