It was a horrible experience, I am a genius with booking.com, travel extensively every year, almost all the hotels, auberge and relais had good reviews from me.
Regarding this auberge, the distance is far from any transportation, a good 15 mins up and down hill from the nearest metro is strenuous especially when you have a heavy luggage, it is almost impossible; you can cap for well over CAD60 from bus/train station, traffic jam is a usual thing.
Upon arrival, I was greeted with an old rundown and dirty house, no one was there for check in and I was not warned of that before, no city guides whatsoever. Even with small b and b, people come for the check in, give you touring guides.
We were given a good size room, but all the furniture was old and cheap. Windows were very small, looking into the side street with no view of course. Worst still the toilet was NOT FLUSHING at all... ... Unspeakable!!
No meal plan included, it has got all breakfast stuff, you have to pay every single thing except tea or coffee, but no filter for the old coffee maker.
It is not the end, we were woken up by garbage collection operation downstairs for a good 90 mins early in the morning. Many rooms were facing this back street where all restaurants and other hotels had their garbage bins to be emptied, luckily we were on the top floor and we didn't open the window, it would be the last thing I want in my itinerary.
When I was checking out, a cleaning lady told me I didn't have to pay, my card was already charged even before I arrived in the auberge.
Booking.com clearly states the card is to hold and not to charge, they charged without any authorization, so I asked the owner to cancel and stop presenting the payment which was the solution given to me by my foreign card company, she refused. Only if she would refund me and pay by my Canadian credit card, I would lose money because of the exchange rate. Why should I as a proper customer lose anything.
