The innkeeper's greeting was less than enthusiastic. We were given the key, told we could find breakfast "downstairs" in the morning and given a few suggestions for dinner that evening. We were not shown to our room nor was there any offer to assist with luggage up to the 2nd floor room. There is no guest lounge or tea/coffee availability so we were surprised that there was only one armchair in such a large room and that the small kitchenette until was not equipped with even a couple of cups. In the morning, we found our way "downstairs" to a dark, cold lower level dining room. There was no one there, the breakfast food (continental) was on a table covered with a cloth, there were a few bowls, no plates. There was no coffee ready, although the coffee maker seemed to be ready to turn on. We found milk in the fridge and helped ourselves to cereal and toast. No one ever arrived! Ther was still noone around when we were ready to check out so, along with another couple, we simply left our key on a table and departed!! Later in the day, we received an email apologizing for the absence of staff at breakfast and offering a small discount on the room charge. Frankly, even if there had not been a problem in the morning, we think this place is overpriced. It is an historic building which as been renovated and could be quite charming but, instead, it is drab with shabby furniture and furnishings.
The location is right in Pictou and easy to find. The room was spacious with a modern, well-equipped bathroom en suite. The location is quiet.
