Comfortable and quiet
Limited meal options in area at this time of year
The rooms were updated, spacious and quiet and the bed very comfortable. Liked the Canadian Coast Guard men that were staying there. Friendly and very helpful.
A unique old building (customs house) renovated very nicely. High ceilings, beautiful high windows. Breakfast is buffet, but good choice of cereals, fruit, and bread. The owner, Doug, was very accommodating and helpful as was Kate.
The town is kind of quiet. The paper plant across the bay ruins the view across the way.
Lovely old building, large main floor room, good amenities.
There could have been a more varied breakfast.
Innkeeper did not seem to care about his clients- stood at his door, gave us a key to our room, told us where it was and where breakfast would be and we never saw him again. Breakfast was minimal - mainly cereal and bread - it was up to us to make our own coffee (once we emptied the old child coffee and grounds and found where the coffee was kept). He may have had a scheduling problem, but given the state of the facilities, it seemed that he just didn't care. It was a very unpleasant stay.
The location is right in Pictou and easy to find. The room was spacious with a modern, well-equipped bathroom en suite. The location is quiet.
The innkeeper's greeting was less than enthusiastic. We were given the key, told we could find breakfast "downstairs" in the morning and given a few suggestions for dinner that evening. We were not shown to our room nor was there any offer to assist with luggage up to the 2nd floor room. There is no guest lounge or tea/coffee availability so we were surprised that there was only one armchair in such a large room and that the small kitchenette until was not equipped with even a couple of cups. In the morning, we found our way "downstairs" to a dark, cold lower level dining room. There was no one there, the breakfast food (continental) was on a table covered with a cloth, there were a few bowls, no plates. There was no coffee ready, although the coffee maker seemed to be ready to turn on. We found milk in the fridge and helped ourselves to cereal and toast. No one ever arrived! Ther was still noone around when we were ready to check out so, along with another couple, we simply left our key on a table and departed!! Later in the day, we received an email apologizing for the absence of staff at breakfast and offering a small discount on the room charge. Frankly, even if there had not been a problem in the morning, we think this place is overpriced. It is an historic building which as been renovated and could be quite charming but, instead, it is drab with shabby furniture and furnishings.
Old style TV, a little small for room, not great linens or pillows
Superb room & ensuite bathroom, very well-appointed & well maintained. Friendly & helpful staff.
As the name suggest, Customs House Inn was once the customs house for Pictou. It is a beautiful Victorian brick building on the harbour front, within a few minutes walk of restaurants and other amenities, but in a very quiet locate. We had a huge, stylishly-decorated room with a very comfortable bed. There is no lift but the innkeeper Doug helped us with our luggage. This was an ideal place to stay for catching the Prince Edward Island ferry, about 15 minutes drive away.
We so appreciate the staff taking our luggage up stairs. Everyone was wonderful! This is one of our favorite hotels on the Canada trip.
Room was large & comfortable. The pub in the lower level where we had breakfast was really unique and nice. Overall, I thought the place was charming, but my wife felt although the place was interesting, the decor was a bit too dated.
No elevator for those who need one. Not enough counter space in the small bathroom to place personal toiletries. TV & window covers need to be updated. Front of building needs some color to be more inviting.
Large clean comfortable no frills room. Innkeeper was friendly breakfast was fine. Large windows opened with view of harbour. Good little cafe on main drag. (Sharons?) very good halibut at great prices.
The town is kind of depressing but an ok place to overnight waiting for p e i ferry.
Historic building with style. Great rooms, friendly stafff. Good location in the heart of the town.
Air condition cannot be switched off by guests. However, when we asked the inn keeper, he did that from a central switchboard.
I loved the size of the room and how clean it was
I loved everything in fact I have told several people about iy
We really liked our room (1C). The ceilings must have been about 12 feet in height, and the windows were big as well. There was also a modern large ensuite bathroom . We slept very well as the Inn is very quiet.
Only a continental type breakfast was offered.
Big room, lovely high ceilings, quiet, friendly town not too far from Cape Breton.
The two sets of stairs, not good when you need a knee replacement.
The rooms were large and very comfortable.
We enjoy reading after a day of sightseeing. Our room had a comfortable sofa but no lamps for reading, even the lamps by the bed were incredibly short. I propped some things under them to raise the height but they were still to short.
A nice old building renovated a number of years ago. Rooms could use some pictures on the walls. Breakfast was good but just juice, coffee/tea, cereal and toast. Not very busy. Innkeeper was friendly.
There are a lot of stairs to the second floor where our room was. Tough for people with bad knees.
Bathroom was clean and had a good shower.
When we arrived, we rang the innkeepers room, he opened the door, asked our name, gave us the key with the room number and stated breakfast would be downstairs in the a.m. We had to find the room ourselves. We were the only guests that night which caused us some concerns since the dead bolt was keyed but we did not have the key and the door had no safety chain. In the morning we went downstairs to get at least a cup of coffee but door was still locked so we left. Expensive bed for one night with no feeling of being welcome. We would not recommend this inn.
We love historic buildings and this is a masterful conversion to a B&B.
Everything was great - good breakfast.
Lovely restored building. Knowledgeable innkeeper.
None to speak of.
In spite of booking months ago, we were told the Inn was overbooked just before we departed the UK but that we could stay at Braeside Inn. This was not a good experience with no bath towels, a duvet without a cover and no tea, coffee facilities. The bar was closed so no drinks were available. I feel the Custom house should not be recommending the Braeside and that they have not been professional in their dealings with us.
The price was reasonable and the room was clean and very spacious felt like we were in a historical building. Easy access to a family restaurant named "SHARON'S"
The hotel was central and easy to walk to restaurants and around the shops and waterfront.
The manager was not friendly and not forthcoming with offers to help us in any way.
- Large room - Large bed - A/C - Central location - Heritage building
- Breakfast - No real community space for guests - No real B&B feeling
