Having to leave.
The hotel Alpenrose is a traditional Swiss ornate challet style building about 220m from Wasserauen railway station and is situated at the start of many walks in the beautiful Alpstein range. Its very quiet location and lack of distractions like TV make it an ideal 'get away from it all' location. You may occasionally hear walkers passing or the odd farm vehicle, but for the most of the time you will only hear the sound of the local river or the distant tinkling of cow bells.
For those who crave more action the town of Appenzell is only 12 minutes away by train. Be aware that after 18.30, the train service is replaced by a bus that departs across the road from the station and the last bus from Appenzell is at 21.32.
The staff at the Alpenrose were really friendly and helpful and if you are staying three nights or more they will provide you with the Appenzeller Guest Card. This provides unlimited travel on local trains and buses as far as St Gallen and Gossau. It also provides free return trips on the Ebenalp, Hoher Kasten and Kronberg cable cars as well as entry to numerous local museums, sports facilities and a local brewery. The normal adult fare for the cable car rides alone would be over CHF100, so this guest card is a real bonus.
My single room at the Alpenrose was clean, quite spacious and had private facilities. The bed was very comfortable and enabled a good night's sleep. The free wi-fi allowed access to emails and general surfing without problem.
Breakfasts are continental style with a variety of cold meats, local cheese, breads, croissants, jams, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, fruit juice, whilst tea or coffee are served at your table by very pleasant staff.
The hotel also serve a variety of optional reasonably priced evening meals between 17.00 - 20.00. I would certainly recommend the rather large 'Alpenrose' ice cream desert after a hard days walking!
