The family-run Continental Parkhotel is located 220 yards south of the main train station of Lugano, where the funicular leaves regularly for the center of the city.
Score from 1287 reviews Excellent
This family-owned hotel is centrally located just a short walk from central Lugano and its breathtaking lakeshore, and the famous Piazza Riforma with its many sidewalk cafes.
Score from 329 reviews Excellent
The Hotel Acquarello is located in the historic quarter of Lugano, right at the lower terminus of the cable car going between the center of town and the main train station.
Score from 599 reviews Good
Offering an outdoor pool and a restaurant, Hotel Colibrì is located in Lugano, a 10-minute drive from the lake. Free WiFi access is available.
Score from 177 reviews Good
Simple but clean rooms with comfortable beds. Windows are double-glazed, but airconditioning in rooms can be noisy. Bathroom is clean but very small cubicle-style. Pool is unheated, so was too cold to swim in by mid-September, despite the fact the days were still very warm. Breakfast has only basic choices, but all are really delicious, especially the breads! Good location. On map it looks as if it might be far from the town centre but is actually well-located, only 2 minute walk from train station and an easy 5 minute walk down the hill to the main square. Can be tiring walking back up the steep hill after a day out, but there is always the option of the funiculaire which has been replaced by the Funibus whilst the funiculaire is being renovated over the next two years. If you want somewhere less expensive and family-friendly to eat, we found the buffet-style restaurant in the Manor Department Store had a great selection of dishes which were freshly cooked and catered to all tastes and they were better priced than eating in the town restaurants. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and multilingual (speak english). Overall Albergo Stella was good value for money and we loved our stay in Lugano.
Near from the main starion. Room is comfortable.
Shower booth is too small.
Simplicity, value and proximity
Very clean with quality fittings and very nice art works. The staff are so nice and friendly and the breakfast is lovely. Has been a favourite for us on our trip. Easy to find from the railway station and very close. I give this hotel a very high rating.
If you have heavy bags just request a lower floor when you book or they will help you with your bags.
It was very close to the train station. It was charming and the staff was friendly and helpful. We had a nice little balcony with a cafe table and chairs which gave us more space. Breakfast was nice, with meats, cheeses, breads and great coffee. There was a television with stations in English.
We had to carry the suitcases up a couple of flights of stairs just to get to the lobby, thou not really an issue unless you have mobility problems. The room was very small and the bathroom was tiny, like it came out of an RV! There was a hair dryer but no outlet in the bathroom so we had to plug it into the wall, but the cord didn't reach far enough to see in the mirror. Minor details! Few complaints.
friendly reception, good location
claustrophobic molded bathroom the size of a closet
Breakfast was good
The staff was very nice...loaned us converters as ours didn't fit when they should have. Room was clean and quite unless you needed the AC. WiFi worked very well. Best thing about this hotel was its closeness to the train station...easy five minute walk. Also staff recommended the Buffet Stazione for dinner. We hesitated as not wanting a "buffet" but went anyway and it proved quite good, not buffet as we thought but lots of things to choose off the menu with decent prices!
We did not like that we had to walk up several steps to get to the reception office. Also did not like that our converters did not fit. The bathroom was very small but the room that our friends stayed in was quite large.
The people running this hotel are lovely. The customer service is great and the breakfast fantastic with fresh croissants and freshly made coffee to order. The room was clean and spacious, not at all noisy so a good night sleep was had. Being a stroll from the train and bus stations at the top of the town is convenient on arrival and a little supermarket at the train station is handy.
Being located at the top of the hill, it is a good amound of uphill exercise to return from the lake.
Wondereful staff, art work, accommodations, breakfast and so forth. Didn't get a chance to try the pool as it wasn't real warm that day and rainy too, but a very nice space to enjoy their patio had the weather been better. Not a great summer overall was reported by staff.
AC went south middle of night so slept with windows open as we often do. This particular location not good for that as lot of traffic noise although abated in the early morning hrs. Really nothing wrong with the AC, just needed to be reset but it's one of those European type machines that doesn't seem obvious to American tourists as to what to do.
The room WAS VERY CLEAN. Close to train station. The help were very friendly and helped us with local things of interest. The breakfast was excellent. A very nice setting. Also the area was so quiet. All in all everything was top notch.
Location Friendliness of staff Back garden
Imagine - a PERFECT room, breakfast, view only TWO BLOCKS from the train station and it is pin drop quiet. Add to the convenience, the Stella is across the street from two buses which take you easily into the middle of town in only five minutes. On top of all that, the staff are enormously helpful, serve a magnificant breakfast in a light and artistic breakfast room or on the garden terrace. I would have stayed a month if I could have!
Everything was PERFECT!
Near to the train station and easy to go to city center. The staff are helpful and friendly. For breakfast there is even traditional Chinese TieGuanYin:)
The Albergo Stella is a family owned hotel, which was reflected in the very friendly and approachable owners. The hotel was also very conveniently located for the main railway station in Lugano, which was approximately 500 metres away. The room was very clean with the adjoining terrace a big plus.
Breakfast was nice, staff was friendly
Toilets were a bit small
Excellent location close to train station and downtown area. Rooms were comfortable, quiet and clean. Also a very good value for the room charge.
Location close to train station (take ramp up to track 4, walk to the end of the platform and follow the signs) and funicular into town center - very convenient. Very pretty garden to have breakfast and relax in afternoon. Small pool (didn't use it myself but nice to have option). Really good coffee in the morning!
Air conditioner in my room didn't work too well. Wasn't such a problem for me as I dont like a/c much but could see it being a problem for someone used to sleeping in a cool space. Lugano in July was hot and very humid.
The croissants at breakfast were good.
The "bathroom" in our room was one of those full size inserts that would be fine if one was camping but paying Lugano prices and being so far from town made this disappointing to say the least. The air conditioner was a noisy, not very effective, free-standing unit. Though he was quite apologetic and explained the mix up, the manager offered only a 5% discount for being locked out nearly 40 minutes at 6:00 p.m. my daughters had returned to the hotel and were asleep. The front door was locked and there was NO ONE at the hotel to let me in. I called through an open window to no avail. After mor than a half hour, I was let in only because I happened on to a hotel employee as he emerged from the basement. The 5% discount seemed insufficient recompense especially since it is given to all guests who indicate that they book the Albergo Stella though Rick Steves. I'm afraid I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Clearly there are paces to stay that are more appropriately staffed and with better facilities for that price and location in Lugano.
close to train station.
no elevator but you can request a ground floor room.
It was close to the train station. Very clean. Great staff.
The owner Daniel was friendly and helpful. Close to railway station.
Very convenient to train station and funicular into city, lovely balcony/porch area
owners were very nice, breakfast was good, close to train, comfy beds
bathroom was smallest out of all our stays in Switzerland
Everything was excellent! The staff is very friendly and the hotel is 5' from the main train station. Room was clean and comfortable.. If I visit Lugano again, I'll definitely stay at the same hotel!
